How Much Money Should You Save for a Gap Year?

Three worked budgets (lean, moderate, comfortable) built from our destination estimates, plus the savings arithmetic to get there.

The number depends on where, how and whether you work. Below are three twelve-month shapes costed from Digital Backpacker's destination estimates (October 2026, per person, flights estimated separately). Use them as starting points, then run your own version in Build My Gap Year, which also produces the monthly savings target.

Lean: $9,000 to $11,000

Nine months in mainland Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent at the backpacker tier ($25 to $32 a day, about $850 a month) plus three months of working-holiday employment that covers itself. Add flights ($1,500 to $2,000 for the big legs), insurance ($600), visas and gear ($500) and a $1,000 reserve. This is the dorm-bed, street-food, overland year, and it is a good one.

Moderate: $15,000 to $18,000

The planner's default. A Spanish-school month in Antigua ($1,200 with homestay and lessons), four months in Latin America at the backpacker tier ($1,200 a month), a working block, then four months in Southeast Asia mixing dorms and private rooms ($1,100 a month). Flights ($2,500), insurance ($900), a dive course and a trek ($1,000), reserve ($1,500).

Comfortable: $24,000 to $30,000

Private rooms throughout (mid-range tier, $2,000 to $2,800 a month in Asia and Latin America, more in Europe), no work block, language and activity courses, and a European summer. The main cost is Europe: mid-range Lisbon or Budapest runs $4,000 to $5,000 a month by our figures.

The savings arithmetic

Target ÷ months until departure = monthly saving. $15,000 in ten months is $1,500 a month; in eighteen months it is $833. Most people get there by combining a job with a hard cut in the three big home expenses (rent, car, going out) for the final six months, and by selling what they will not need for a year. Keep the gap-year fund in a separate account you cannot see from your everyday banking app.

Where the plan goes wrong

  • Counting the working block's wages before earning them: budget the year without them, then treat wages as the comfort upgrade.
  • Forgetting the return: a landing month at home costs as much as a travel month.
  • Under-insuring to save $300, then paying for a hospital in cash.
  • Fast travel: every border and flight is money and a lost day. Slower is cheaper.
