Budapest
Thermal baths, ruin bars and a grand river city at Central Europe's best prices.

Overview
Budapest is two cities joined by bridges: hilly, castle-topped Buda and flat, grand, lively Pest, with the Danube and its Parliament between them. It has the thermal baths of an Ottoman and Habsburg past, the ruin bars of a post-communist present, a cafe culture that refuses to hurry, and a cost of living that still undercuts Prague and Vienna. Nomads have known this for a decade; the White Card made it official.
Why visit
For a beautiful European capital at a fraction of Western prices, with spa days, a serious food and wine scene and Vienna, Bratislava and Zagreb a few hours away.

Things to do
By travel style
One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.
Europe's great budget capital: party hostels, cheap beer, free walking tours, baths, and trains to Vienna, Prague and the Balkans.
TEFL teaching and hostel work are common; universities draw thousands of international students.
The White Card, fibre, cheap central apartments and a community: one of Europe's best-value nomad cities.
A natural Central European hub on any overland route between Western Europe and the Balkans or Turkey.
Low costs, good private healthcare and an affordable, cultured life; residence routes beyond the White Card take advice.
Hungarian is a mountain, but cooking, wine, photography and the spa habit fill a season.
Flat Pest, excellent transit, baths, concerts and cafes: one of Europe's most comfortable cities for older travellers on a budget.
Practical
Safety
Safe. Pickpockets on the 4/6 tram and in the Jewish Quarter at night; drink-spiking and overcharging in a few nightlife bars; use Bolt or Fotaxi rather than hailing.
Common scams
Restaurant and bar overcharging in Vaci utca (check menus for prices), unofficial taxis at the airport and station, and 'friendly women' bar invitations that end in extortionate bills.
Connectivity and remote work
Fast fibre everywhere; coworking at Kaptar, Impact Hub, Loffice, HubHub and more; a large tech scene.
A long-standing nomad favourite: cheap, central, beautiful, well connected, with the White Card as a legal route and a social scene centred on District VII's cafes and coworking.

Clink beer glasses with care (a historical taboo now mostly joked about), greet in shops, tip 10 to 15 percent, and expect direct conversation.
Insurance and health
Good private clinics (FirstMed, Medicover); public hospitals are overstretched; insurance for non-EU visitors.
