Build My Gap Year

Suggested blocks of travel, work, study and volunteering, a savings timeline and an editable plan with checklist.

Enter your age, passport, length, budget and interests. The planner proposes blocks of travel, work, language study and volunteering sized to the year, suggests destinations by season and cost for each travel block, lists the working-holiday programmes you are eligible for, totals three versions of the budget, and turns the moderate total into a monthly savings target.

Working-holiday programmes for a 19-year-old United States passport holder

Methodology

Tier is chosen from budget ÷ months (under $1,600 a month = backpacker, under $2,800 = mid-range, above = comfortable). Travel blocks pick destinations by climate fit for those months (WMO normals or editorial best months), gap-year fit (editorial), daily cost and interest tags. Work blocks are costed at 35% of a travel month on the assumption that earnings cover most living costs. Totals: budget −20%, comfortable +35%. Programme eligibility is a filter on nationality and age from our dated, sourced database; it is a prompt to verify, not a decision.
