Slow travel is the cheapest way to live abroad well, because its costs are the costs of living rather than of visiting: a monthly rental instead of a nightly room, a market instead of a menu, a transit pass instead of taxis, and no first-night premium every three days. This page prices it with our database's monthly rent estimates and daily living figures (October 2026).
The monthly formula
Monthly cost = one-bedroom rent + (daily living estimate minus the accommodation component) × 30. Our mid-range daily figures already assume some restaurants and taxis; a slow traveller who cooks and walks sits between the backpacker and mid-range tiers.
Monthly estimates, mid-range tier
| Destination | Rent | Living (30 days) | Month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chiang Mai | $450 | $1,170 | ≈$1,600 |
| Siem Reap | $350 | $1,230 | ≈$1,600 |
| Hanoi | $500 | $1,140 | ≈$1,650 |
| Oaxaca | $650 | $1,410 | ≈$2,050 |
| Tbilisi | $650 | $1,320 | ≈$2,000 |
| Medellín | $750 | $1,410 | ≈$2,150 |
| Budapest | $800 | $1,740 | ≈$2,550 |
| Lisbon | $1,400 | $2,130 | ≈$3,550 |
| Las Palmas | $1,000 | $1,860 | ≈$2,850 |
| Tokyo | $1,200 | $2,190 | ≈$3,400 |
These exclude flights, insurance and visas, and they assume you eat out as a mid-range traveller does; cooking half your meals cuts 15 to 25 percent.
A slow year
Four three-month bases in cheap regions: about $20,000 to $26,000 all-in with four flights and insurance. Four bases mixing Europe and Asia: $30,000 to $40,000. The circuit builder sums any combination with its own monthly formula (which uses 75 percent of the daily figure to reflect settled living); the live table below shows months covered by a $30,000 budget at the comfortable tier.
Where slow travel saves most
Cities with a strong rental market and expensive hotels (Lisbon, Barcelona, Tokyo, Mexico City) show the biggest gap between a nightly room and a monthly lease. Cities with cheap guesthouses (Pai, Luang Prabang, Siem Reap) show the smallest, because the nightly rate was already a bargain.
The hidden costs
Deposits (one to two months, returned if you are lucky and diligent), utilities and internet in some rentals, the first week's furnishing of a kitchen, a gym membership, and the visa run or extension that a longer stay forces. Budget 10 percent on top of the monthly figure.
