Pai
A valley town of 762 curves, waterfalls and hammocks where days stop being counted.

Overview
Pai is what happens when a Shan market town in a mountain valley is discovered by backpackers and decides, mostly, to stay small. The road from Chiang Mai has 762 bends; what waits at the end is a walking street of pancake stalls and craft beer, hot springs, canyon sunsets, rice paddies and a surrounding ring of waterfalls and viewpoints best reached by scooter. People arrive for two nights and leave three weeks later.
Why visit
To slow down completely. Pai is the cheapest place in this catalogue to do nothing beautifully, and the hill country around it is some of northern Thailand's prettiest.

Where to stay
Guesthouses and bamboo bungalows along the Pai River and across the bamboo bridge; hostels near the walking street; a handful of boutique resorts in the paddies. Book ahead for the December-January peak.
Neighbourhoods
Walking Street and the river for everything within a stroll; Mae Hi and the paddies east of town for bungalows in the fields; Santichon for the Yunnanese village.
Food
The night walking street (every evening) for grilled meat, Shan tofu, mango sticky rice and Burmese tea-leaf salad; a strong vegan and organic cafe scene; Na's Kitchen and the Shan noodle shops for proper local food.
Getting around
Minivans from Chiang Mai's Arcade terminal every hour (150 to 250 baht, 3 to 4 hours, motion sickness tablets advised). Scooters are how everyone gets around the valley; bicycles work for the town.
Things to do
By travel style
One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.
The hammock stop of the Thailand circuit; hostels, waterfalls, hot springs and the cheapest week of most trips.
Volunteering with hill-tribe schools and permaculture farms is possible; the risk is losing a month to the hammock.
Fine for a quiet writing week, poor for anything that needs reliable video calls or power.
The scenic road north to Mae Hong Son and the Laos border makes Pai a genuine waypoint, not a detour.
Idyllic and very cheap but the nearest serious hospital is three hours away; better as a season than a residence.
Yoga, meditation and permaculture courses in a valley built for switching off.
Lovely in the cool season with a car rather than a scooter; the bar strip is easy to avoid, the medical cover is thin.
Practical
Safety
Very safe town; the road and the scooters are the danger. The curves from Chiang Mai and the valley's gravel lanes injure inexperienced riders daily, and Pai's hospital is small.
Common scams
Almost none. Scooter rental damage disputes are the recurring one: photograph everything.
Connectivity and remote work
Good enough for remote work in town (fibre in cafes and better guesthouses, 4G across the valley) but power cuts and slower bungalow Wi-Fi are common. A handful of coworking cafes; no formal coworking space of scale.
Pai works for writers and light remote workers who can live with occasional outages; it is not a video-call town. Many Chiang Mai nomads come for a week to reset.

Editorial assessment (October 2026).
Language
Thai and Shan; English everywhere in the tourist economy.
Cultural etiquette
A conservative hill town under the party strip: cover up away from the pool, keep noise down after the bars close, respect the Shan and Chinese villages.
Insurance and health
Scooter cover and medical evacuation to Chiang Mai (3 hours by road) matter more here than almost anywhere.
Visa information
Thailand rules apply; the nearest immigration office for extensions is Chiang Mai.
