Hungary

Budapest is the Central European capital that budget travellers and nomads keep returning to: thermal baths, ruin bars, a grand riverfront and prices that still undercut Prague and Vienna.

Safety

Safe; the classic scams are overcharging in certain bars and taxis. Use official taxis (Főtaxi, Bolt).

Official advisory: Hungary - Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions (U.S. Department of State, ). UK FCDO advice ↗

Health

Good healthcare; Budapest is a dental tourism hub. Insurance for non-EU visitors.

Money

Hungary uses the forint, not the euro; many places accept cards and some tourist businesses take euros at poor rates. Avoid Euronet ATMs.

Tipping: 10 to 15 percent expected in restaurants (check for included service charge) · Tap water: Safe to drink

Getting around

Budapest transit is excellent and cheap; MÁV trains and FlixBus reach neighbouring capitals in a few hours.

SIMs and connectivity

Yettel, Telekom and Vodafone sell prepaid SIMs; EU roaming applies.
