Assumptions
- Daily costs are Digital Backpacker's midrange tier estimates per destination (see each destination's budget section for date, method and confidence).
- Transport between stops is estimated from straight-line distance: about $0.045 per km overland, $0.11 per km plus $35 in transfers by air. Real fares vary with booking time and season.
- Flights to and from home, insurance, visas and gear are not included; add them in the Trip Cost Calculator.
- Visa lines list the countries to check in the Visa & Work Finder; nothing here is an eligibility decision.
How the engine works
Scoring: lifestyle fit (editorial, 1 to 5) × 1.2; +1.5 per matched interest tag; climate fit from WMO normals for the travel months (or editorial best months where no normals exist) × 3; a cost term that rewards destinations under your per-day budget and penalises those over it; +2.5 for preferred regions; exclusion of avoided regions. Sequencing: nearest-neighbour from the best-scored start, weighted so quality still counts. Days: proportional to pace with a small bonus for cities with more to do. Costs: per-destination daily estimates by tier × days, plus a distance-based transport allowance ($0.045 per km overland, $0.11 per km plus $35 by air). No live fares, no schedules, no claims of availability.
