The red city: medina, mountains and desert three hours from Europe.

Marrakech is the sensory overload Europe keeps on its doorstep: the Jemaa el-Fna square at dusk, the souks' kilometres of lanes, riads hidden behind blank walls, and the snow-capped Atlas on the skyline. Budget airlines make it a long weekend from London or Paris; the longer-stay traveller finds a riad room for the…

Marrakech, the coast and the High Atlas

Marrakech starts the route with the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, the souks, the Bahia Palace and the Majorelle Garden. A three-hour bus reaches Essaouira, a walled Atlantic port with a slower pace, fishing harbour and steady winds. Back through Marrakech, the road climbs to Imlil, a village in the High Atlas used as the trailhead for walks among Berber villages and for the two-day ascent of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak.

Kasbahs, gorges and the Sahara

Crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the route reaches Ait Benhaddou, a fortified earthen village on the UNESCO World Heritage list that has appeared in many films. East from Ouarzazate lies the Dades Valley, with walks into the Dades Gorge, and the town of Tinghir, gateway to the narrow walls of the Todra Gorge. The road then continues to Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, where camel treks lead to desert camps for a night under the stars. Many travellers cover this whole stretch on a multi-day tour from Marrakech; doing it independently by bus and grand taxi is slower but possible.

Fes, Chefchaouen and Tangier

A long bus ride north reaches Fes, whose medina, Fes el-Bali, is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world, with the Chouara tannery, the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university, and the restored Bou Inania madrasa. Chefchaouen, in the Rif mountains, is known for its blue-washed lanes and nearby hiking to Akchour waterfalls. The route ends in Tangier, looking across the Strait of Gibraltar, with its kasbah, cafes and a ferry link to Spain for travellers continuing into Europe.

Practical notes

Visas: many Western passports enter Morocco visa-free for short stays, but rules differ by nationality, so check the official Moroccan consular source. Transport: CTM and Supratours buses link the main towns, grand taxis cover shorter hops, and the Merzouga to Fes leg is a long bus or private transfer; the Al Boraq high-speed train links Tangier with Rabat and Casablanca for onward travel. Weather: spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons; summer is very hot inland and in the desert, and winter brings cold nights and snow in the Atlas. Budget: the mid figure assumes private rooms in riads, a shared three-day desert tour or equivalent transport, some guided medina walks and mostly local restaurants. Safety: persistent touts and unofficial guides are common in the medinas; dress norms are conservative outside the big cities; check your government's current travel advice.
