Europe, North Africa and Istanbul
The loop starts in Lisbon in late September, when the city is still warm. A short flight crosses to Marrakech, for the medina, the souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa square, with the Atlas Mountains within day-trip range. A longer flight leads to Istanbul, which sits between Europe and Asia and is pleasant in October.
Asia
The longest single flight on the route runs from Istanbul to Bangkok. Late October is the end of Thailand's rainy season, and the overnight train north to Chiang Mai is a classic journey. Northern Thailand and Hanoi are both entering their cooler, drier months in November. From Hanoi a flight reaches Tokyo, timed for late November, when autumn colour reaches the city's parks and then Kyoto, a short bullet train ride away.
Across the Pacific to the Americas
The trans-Pacific leg from Japan to Mexico City is usually a long overnight flight, and crossing the date line means arriving on the same calendar day or earlier. December is in the dry season in Mexico City and Oaxaca. From Oaxaca, flights connect through Mexico City and Lima to Cusco, the base for the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu; December is the start of the rainy season there, so mornings tend to be clearer. The route finishes in Buenos Aires at the beginning of the southern summer. Round-the-world tickets from airline alliances are one way some travellers book a loop like this; others buy separate one-way flights, which allows changes along the way.
Informations pratiques
Visas: Most Western passports can enter the stops on this route visa-free or with an online authorisation for a short stay, but requirements differ by nationality, and some countries ask for proof of onward travel. Check each official source before booking. Transport: Around eight flights, including three long intercontinental legs (Istanbul to Bangkok, Japan to Mexico City, and Mexico to Peru), plus a sleeper train in Thailand, a bullet train in Japan and a bus in Mexico. Weather: Late summer in Lisbon, autumn in Istanbul and Japan, the start of the dry season in northern Thailand and Mexico, the early rainy season in Cusco, and early summer in Buenos Aires. Budget: Unlike the rest of this collection, the figures include the intercontinental legs between stops (but not the flights to Lisbon and home from Buenos Aires). The mid figure assumes private rooms or mid-range hotels, some guided tours (Machu Picchu, the Atlas Mountains) and economy flights. Safety: Petty theft is the main concern in the larger cities; Cusco sits at about 3,400 m, and many visitors take a day or two to acclimatise.
