    TbilisiPhoto: lumoplank · CC0

Sulphur baths, 8,000 vintages, carved balconies and a one-year visa-free welcome.

The Balkans' most colourful capital, a year-long welcome for Americans, and a coast and mountains no one has priced in yet.

Tirana was a closed, grey capital until 1991 and has spent three decades painting itself: pastel apartment blocks, a cafe culture that rivals Italy's, a boulevard of new architecture, a cable car to a mountain, and the Blloku district where the Communist elite once lived now full of bars and coworking spaces. It is…

Georgia

Tbilisi is the starting point, with its sulphur baths, balconied old town and a growing remote-work community. A marshrutka (shared minibus) along the Georgian Military Road reaches Stepantsminda, better known as Kazbegi, where a trail climbs to the Gergeti Trinity Church below Mount Kazbek. Kutaisi in western Georgia is a base for the Prometheus Cave and Gelati Monastery, and the route then drops to Batumi on the Black Sea coast, which is warm and humid in summer. Georgian food and wine, from khachapuri to amber wines made in clay qvevri jars, are a large part of the draw.

Istanbul

A flight from Batumi crosses to Istanbul, which gets nearly two weeks here: the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar on the historic peninsula, ferries across the Bosphorus, and the neighbourhoods of Kadikoy and Balat. Istanbul is also the main flight hub between the Caucasus and the Balkans.

The western Balkans

From Istanbul a flight reaches Tirana, the Albanian capital, with a short side trip to Berat and its Ottoman-era houses. Buses run north to Kotor in Montenegro, set on a fjord-like bay below steep mountain walls, then inland to Sarajevo, where Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian quarters sit side by side and the war history is documented in several museums. Belgrade follows, with its fortress above the meeting of the Sava and Danube rivers. The route ends in Budapest, the only Schengen stop, for the thermal baths and the Danube waterfront. Travel days on Balkan buses are often long, and timetables are best checked locally.

Practical notes

Visas: Georgia allows long visa-free stays for many nationalities, and Turkey, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia generally allow short visa-free stays for most Western passports, each with its own limits. Hungary is in the Schengen Area, and the route uses only a few days there. Check each official source before travel. Transport: Marshrutkas and trains in Georgia, two flights via Istanbul, then buses through the Balkans. Weather: Summer is hot in Tbilisi, Istanbul, Tirana and Belgrade; Kazbegi and the mountains are cooler. June and September are milder than July and August. Budget: The mid figure assumes private rooms in guesthouses or small apartments, a few guided day trips and the flights from Batumi to Istanbul and Istanbul to Tirana. Istanbul and Kotor are the most expensive stops in summer. Safety: Generally low-risk; mountain roads are winding, and Bosnia still has landmine-affected areas away from marked paths.
