Solo Travel: The Practical Guide

Travelling alone is the default on the trail, not the exception. How to start, how to meet people, the safety habits that work, and the differences for women.

Most long-term travellers are solo, and most are rarely alone. Hostels, walking tours, cooking classes and shared minivans supply company on demand; the solitude between is the part people come to value. This guide covers the practicalities, including the ones that differ for women, with the destinations our desk rates highest for a first solo trip.

Why solo works

You set the pace, change plans at breakfast, say yes to the invitation and no to the night bus, and learn what you actually like rather than what the group does. The cost is the single-room premium (avoided in hostels) and the occasional dinner alone, which stops being awkward by week two.

Where to start

Our destination pages carry a solo tag and an editorial social score. The strongest first-solo destinations: Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Hoi An, Antigua, Oaxaca, Lisbon, Budapest, Tbilisi, Kyoto and Tokyo: safe, social, well-trodden and easy to navigate.

Meeting people

Stay in hostels with common rooms (private room if you prefer), take the free walking tour on day one, book a cooking class or a day trip, eat at the counter, join the language exchange, and say yes to the group heading to the next town. For longer stays: coworking, a gym, a class of any kind.

Safety habits

Share your route with someone at home and check in; arrive in new cities in daylight; apps for transport at night; drinks watched; a photo of your passport and the hostel's address card; trust the instinct that says leave; register with your embassy for long stays. The safety guide ranks the real risks.

For women

Women travel solo on every route on this site in large numbers. The additional realities: more unwanted attention in a few places (Morocco's medinas, parts of India, nightlife districts everywhere), which dress and a firm manner reduce but do not remove; female-only dorms; a hotel with a 24-hour desk for the first night in a new country; and a lower tolerance for the "friendly stranger" invitation. Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, Portugal, Georgia and Mexico's highland cities are widely reported as easy; solo women over 50 report less hassle than younger women almost everywhere.

Eating alone

Counters, street food, markets, night markets, hostel kitchens and the plastic-stool restaurants of Asia make it normal; fine dining is harder and the lunch set solves it.

Loneliness

Arrives in the second or third week and on the first night in each new city; leaves with the first conversation. Longer stays, routines and a project cure the deeper kind.

The one rule

You owe nobody your company or your trust. The freedom to walk away from a person, a place or a plan is what solo travel is for.
