Independent travel after 50 is not a diluted version of backpacking; it is often the real thing with better judgement. The people on the Annapurna trail, in the Spanish schools of Antigua, in Chiang Mai's cafes and on the Portuguese Camino are disproportionately in their fifties and sixties, and they tend to have more time, more money per day and clearer tastes than the twenty-somethings. This guide sets out what our desk learned writing the Grey Hair Backpackers notes for every destination.
Comfortable budget travel
The mid-range tier in our database (private rooms, a mix of restaurants and self-catering, some taxis) is the natural fit: $60 to $90 a day in mainland Southeast Asia, Nepal and Guatemala; $90 to $120 in Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Georgia; $130 to $190 in southern and central Europe; $130 to $170 in Japan and Korea. Comfortable-tier boutique hotels and apartments double that. The Trip Cost Calculator prices a trip at either tier.
Private rooms versus dorms
A private room in a hostel gives you the common room, the kitchen and the notice board without the dorm; a guesthouse or homestay gives you a host; an apartment for a month gives you a kitchen and a neighbourhood. Dorms are fine for a night in transit if you sleep well; nobody in a dorm cares how old you are.
Longer stays
Two to four weeks per base is where this age group's travel shines: the market vendor knows you, the Spanish improves, the body recovers, and the monthly rental halves the accommodation cost. The circuit builder works for retirees as well as nomads: set the time zone to flexible and the internet requirement low.
Health and insurance
Insurance premiums rise with age bands and with declared conditions; buy it anyway, with evacuation, and read the activity exclusions. Carry prescriptions and the generic names of medication. Our country pages name the hospitals used by foreigners; Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City, Medellín, Lisbon and Cape Town have private care at or above home standards. Altitude (Cusco, Kathmandu, La Paz, Mexico City) needs a slow ascent profile at any age and a word with your doctor at this one.
Solo travel
Common and safe in the destinations our desk rates highest for this group. Women over 50 travelling alone report less harassment than younger women in most of these places and the same precautions apply: apps for transport at night, drinks watched, a hotel with a 24-hour desk in the first city.
Meeting other mature travellers
Language schools (the average age in Antigua's one-to-one classes is often over 40), cooking classes, guided day trips, the Camino, trekking groups, volunteering with serious organisations, and the long-stay communities of Chiang Mai, Oaxaca, Lisbon, Las Palmas and Cape Town.
Physical preparation and accessibility
Daily walking for a month beforehand, a 35 to 40 litre bag kept under 10 kg, and routes that avoid five-storey walk-ups and cobbled hills when knees object (our destination pages flag Lisbon's and Porto's stairs, Cusco's altitude, Hanoi's pavements). Taxis and private drivers are cheap enough in most of these countries to remove the obstacles that remain.
Destinations our desk rates five out of five for this group
Chiang Mai, Hoi An, Luang Prabang, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Kyoto, Funchal, Las Palmas, Budapest, Prague, Oaxaca. Each page's Older Backpackers note says why.
