A first gap year is a first everything: first long flight alone, first hostel, first border, first budget that has to last. The nerves are proportionate and so is the payoff. This is a plan for the first one, written for the traveller and for the parents reading over their shoulder.
Start where the trail is strongest
Southeast Asia or Central America for a first solo trip: cheap, safe by regional standards, dense with hostels and other first-timers, and connected by buses and budget flights. Bangkok to Chiang Mai to the islands, or Mexico's Yucatán to Guatemala's Antigua and Lake Atitlán: routes so well-worn that getting lost is an achievement. Our Two Weeks in Thailand and Six Weeks in Central America routes are first-trip shapes.
Give the year a spine
A language course in the first month (Spanish in Antigua, with a homestay, is the classic), a working block in a working-holiday country if your passport allows (Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Korea; check the finder), a volunteering placement with an organisation that publishes a child-protection policy, and travel around all of it. The Build My Gap Year planner lays it out by month with a savings target.
The money conversation
Agree the total before departure, split it into a monthly figure, and keep an emergency fund that neither side treats as travel money. Our estimates put a backpacker month at roughly $800 in mainland Southeast Asia and $1,000 to $1,400 in Latin America; see how much to save. Two bank cards from different banks, one kept separately, and a fee-free travel card.
Book the first week, not the year
The flight in, the first two or three nights, and the first onward ticket. Everything after that is better booked from the road, where the advice is current and the plans change daily.
Carry less than you think
A 40-litre bag, a week of clothes, a first-aid kit, a padlock, a head torch, a power bank, a filter bottle, copies of everything in the cloud. The packing list builder produces the list; the first fortnight produces the parcel home.
Safety, the real version
Scooters (do not ride without a licence and a helmet; insurance will not pay), water and sun, drink spiking in party towns, the taxi touts at every airport, and the simple rules: apps for transport at night, drinks watched, valuables in the daypack on buses, a photo of your passport, a check-in message home every few days. Violent crime against backpackers in the classic regions is rare. Insurance with medical evacuation, bought before departure.
Loneliness and its cure
It arrives in week two or three and leaves the moment you say yes to the walking tour, the shared dinner, the group heading to the next town. Hostels with common rooms, cooking classes and day trips are the social machinery; use it.
Make it count on paper
Keep a record: the course certificate, the employer's reference, the volunteering letter, the languages you can now hold a conversation in. Universities and employers respond to a gap year with a shape. See coming home for the return.
