Caribbean beach, cenotes and the Riviera Maya's easiest long-stay base.

Playa del Carmen is the Riviera Maya's practical town: a walkable grid on a Caribbean beach, a ferry to Cozumel, cenotes and Mayan ruins in every direction, and a long-stay community of nomads, retirees and dive instructors who chose it over Cancun's resorts and Tulum's prices. Fifth Avenue is a tourist strip; a few…

Three volcanoes, a ruined colonial capital and the cheapest Spanish lessons in the Americas.

Antigua was Spain's capital of Central America until earthquakes persuaded the colonists to move it in 1773, leaving a grid of cobbled streets, ruined churches and painted facades under three volcanoes. It is the backpacker and language-school capital of the region: one-to-one Spanish for a few dollars an hour…

Weeks one and two: Yucatan and Chiapas

Land in Cancun and leave it: Playa del Carmen or Tulum for cenotes and reefs (4 nights), Valladolid and Chichen Itza (2), then the long bus to San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas (3) for highland markets and the canyon. Cross into Guatemala by shuttle to Lake Atitlan.

Weeks three and four: Guatemala

Atitlan's villages (4), then Antigua for a week of one-to-one Spanish and the Acatenango overnight climb (7). Semuc Champey's turquoise pools and Flores for Tikal's jungle pyramids (5) complete the country. Bus via Rio Dulce to the Honduran border.

Weeks five and six: Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica

Utila or Roatan for cheap diving (4), the long bus south through Honduras to Leon in Nicaragua for volcano boarding and Granada's colonial streets (5), Ometepe island's twin volcanoes (3), then Costa Rica: Monteverde's cloud forest and La Fortuna's Arenal volcano (5), ending in San Jose or on the Pacific at Santa Teresa.

Practical notes

Visas: the CA-4 agreement gives most Western passports 90 days shared across Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua; Mexico and Costa Rica are separate stamps. Nicaragua's entry requirements and political situation need checking before travel. Safety: use tourist shuttles rather than chicken buses after dark, climb volcanoes with guides, and read current advice for Honduras and Nicaragua. Budget: Costa Rica costs roughly double the rest; the low figure assumes dorms and chicken buses, mid adds shuttles, a dive course and Spanish school. Season: the dry season from November to April.
