FIRE Travel vs Expat Retirement

Travelling indefinitely or settling in one cheaper country: the costs, the healthcare and tax consequences, and the hybrid that most people end up with.

Two ways to spend financial independence abroad: keep moving (two to four bases a year, no fixed residence) or settle (one country, a residence visa, a lease or a purchase, a local doctor). They look similar on Instagram and behave very differently in a spreadsheet, a tax return and a hospital.

Cost

Settling is cheaper per month: a twelve-month lease beats four three-month ones, you furnish a kitchen once, you learn the prices, and you stop paying for flights. Our monthly estimates for a comfortable life in Chiang Mai ($3,300), Oaxaca ($3,900) or Lisbon ($5,700) assume monthly rentals; a settled resident on a yearly lease would typically do 10 to 20 percent better. Travelling adds flights, deposits and the premium of never knowing the cheap places. Over a year the gap is $5,000 to $15,000 in favour of settling.

Healthcare

The decisive difference. A resident can join a national scheme (Portugal, Spain, Thailand's social security for some visa classes), buy local private insurance at local prices, and keep one doctor who knows their history. A traveller needs international cover, which is expensive and gets harder to buy with age and pre-existing conditions, and sees a different clinic every time. Past 60 this argues hard for a base.

Tax

Settling makes you tax-resident somewhere, which can be good (a favourable regime, a treaty with your home country) or bad (worldwide taxation of your portfolio income, exit rules later). Travelling can leave you resident nowhere in practice and still liable at home in law; several countries have tightened the rules on "perpetual travellers". Neither is a loophole. Both need advice.

Visas

Residence visas for people with passive income exist in most of our countries (Portugal, Spain, Greece, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico, Colombia, Indonesia, Cambodia, South Africa) with income floors and renewals; travelling on tourist entries is simpler but caps each stay and asks nothing of you in return. The finder lists both with sources and last-verified dates.

Life

Settling brings friends, a language, a routine, a gym, a dentist, a favourite table; the texture that makes a place a life. Travelling brings the variety and the weather and the sense of a world still unfolding. Most people want both and find that two years of pure travel is the point at which they start looking at leases.

The hybrid

A base in one favourable country (healthcare, tax anchor, a home for the things) for six to eight months a year, with two or three travel blocks in its off-season: Chiang Mai with European summers, Lisbon with Asian winters, Cape Town with the northern spring. The circuit builder models the travel months; the calculator prices the whole year and shows how many months the budget covers in each place.
