A sabbatical is a cash-flow problem with a known end date. The preparation is to fund three things separately: the time away, the obligations that do not pause, and the months after you return. Figures below use Digital Backpacker's destination estimates (October 2026).
Pot one: the trip
Choose the tier honestly. Professionals on a break usually travel mid-range (private rooms, restaurants, some taxis): about $2,000 to $2,600 a month in Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Hoi An or Siem Reap; $2,900 to $3,500 in Oaxaca, Mexico City, Medellín or Tbilisi; $4,000 to $5,500 in Lisbon, Athens, Budapest or Split; $5,000-plus in Tokyo or Barcelona. Add flights ($1,500 to $4,000 for a six-month trip), insurance ($400 to $900), courses and the big experiences. The money-last tool turns a lump sum into months per destination.
Pot two: the life on pause
Rent or mortgage (let the flat if you can; a six-month let covers most of it and furnished short lets are easier than ever), storage ($50 to $150 a month), car (sell or SORN/store it; insurance and parking for an unused car cost more than a rental later), subscriptions (cancel ruthlessly), phone (keep the number alive on the cheapest plan for two-factor codes), insurance policies, pension contributions (ask whether your employer will keep contributing on unpaid leave; if not, decide whether to keep paying in yourself), loan payments. Most people under-count this pot by half.
Pot three: the landing
Three months of full living costs at home, because job searches take time and the first salary arrives a month after the start date. This is the pot people skip and regret.
How to build the pots
Date the departure, divide each pot by the months until then, and automate the transfers into three separate accounts. A year of preparation at a professional salary funds most six-month breaks without heroics; the usual accelerants are letting the flat early and selling the car.
What not to do
Do not fund the trip from a pension or by selling long-term investments in a down market; the cost compounds for decades. Do not carry credit-card debt into a break. Do not count on remote freelance income you have not yet earned.
Tax and residency
Six months abroad rarely changes your tax residency; a year might, depending on your country's rules and the countries you spend time in. Letting your home has tax consequences. Take advice if the break is long or the sums are large; nothing here is tax advice.
