Eight cities carry most of the world's nomad traffic. The table below compares them on the five things that decide a base, using our dated estimates (October 2026) and editorial assessments; the comparison tool runs the same numbers for any five destinations you choose.

Reading the table

Cheapest full package: Chiang Mai, then Kuala Lumpur and Tbilisi. Best internet: Lisbon, Budapest, Kuala Lumpur, Chiang Mai. Biggest communities: Bali, Lisbon, Chiang Mai, Medellín and Mexico City are tied at the top; Kuala Lumpur is the under-rated quiet one. Easiest legality: Georgia (a year, no paperwork), then Mexico and Colombia on generous stamps, then the formal nomad visas of Portugal, Hungary and Thailand. Hardest trade-offs: Lisbon's rent, Bali's traffic and guesthouse Wi-Fi, Medellín's night-time risks, Mexico City's altitude and Roma-Condesa prices, Chiang Mai's smoke season from late February to April.

Time zones

For US clients: Mexico City and Medellín are effortless, Lisbon and Budapest give a long overlap, the Asian cities mean night shifts. For European clients: Lisbon, Budapest and Tbilisi are trivial, Kuala Lumpur and Chiang Mai give a morning overlap, the Americas an evening one. The U.S. hours page quantifies this.

Seasons

Chiang Mai from November to February; Lisbon and Budapest from April to October; Medellín any month; Bali from May to September; Mexico City from October to April; Tbilisi in May, June, September and October; Kuala Lumpur any month with an umbrella. The circuit builder sequences them.
