Comparing FIRE Travel Destinations

The eight dimensions that matter to a financially independent traveller, and how our destinations score on each with dated figures.

A backpacker compares dorm prices; a FIRE traveller compares systems: healthcare, residence routes, tax regimes, banking, climate, safety, cost and the texture of daily life. The comparison tool and the calculator's destination table put the quantitative parts side by side; this guide covers the dimensions and names the destinations that lead on each.

1. Cost at the comfortable tier

Monthly estimates (rent plus non-accommodation living, comfortable tier, October 2026): Chiang Mai and Siem Reap around $3,300 to $3,600, Oaxaca and Kathmandu $3,900 to $4,100, Tbilisi, Medellín, Mexico City and Kuala Lumpur $4,300 to $5,000, Lisbon, Budapest and Athens $5,500 to $6,500, Barcelona and Tokyo $7,000 to $9,000.

2. Healthcare

Private systems with international-standard hospitals at moderate prices: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City, Medellín, Lisbon, Budapest (dental), Istanbul, Cape Town. Thin: Pai, Luang Prabang, Zanzibar, Kathmandu, Antigua (the capital is an hour away).

3. Residence routes

Established paths for passive-income or retired applicants: Portugal (D7), Spain (non-lucrative), Malaysia (MM2H), Thailand (retirement and LTR), Mexico (Temporary Resident), Colombia (pension visa), Indonesia (retirement KITAS), Cambodia (ER visa), South Africa (retired person), Georgia (a year without any). Each has thresholds and a last-verified date in the finder; none is an eligibility promise.

4. Tax regimes

Several countries court foreign residents with special regimes that change often (Portugal's rules changed in 2024, Spain's Beckham law, Greece's flat tax, Georgia's 1 percent for small business, Malaysia's territorial system, Thailand's 2024 changes to remitted income). This is where qualified advice earns its fee; the site states none of it as advice.

5. Climate

Year-round mild: Medellín, Antigua, Las Palmas, Funchal, Mexico City (altitude), Kuala Lumpur (hot but constant). Seasonal pairs: Chiang Mai in winter with Lisbon in summer; Cape Town's summer with Europe's. The circuit builder sequences them.

6. Safety

Country-level U.S. advisory levels sit on every country page with their date. Level 1 countries in the database include Japan, Korea, Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Czechia, Georgia, Albania, Thailand, Malaysia, Morocco and more; Mexico, Colombia, Peru and South Africa carry higher levels with regional variation that the pages explain.

7. Banking and money

Card-friendly, low-fee: Portugal, Spain, Malaysia, Korea, Japan (now), South Africa. Cash-heavy or awkward: Argentina (exchange-rate regimes), Georgia and Albania (fine but cash-based), Cambodia (dollarised). Argentina's volatility is a special case covered on its country page.

8. Daily texture

The thing no table captures: whether you want to walk out into Lisbon's light, Kyoto's temples, Oaxaca's markets or Cape Town's mountain. Our lifestyle-fit notes for FIRE travellers on each destination page are the closest we get to it in words; the fives are Chiang Mai, Kuala Lumpur, Lisbon, Mexico City and Cape Town.
