Can You Travel the World on $1 Million?

A million dollars at a 3.5 to 4 percent withdrawal is $35,000 to $40,000 a year. Here is what that buys, destination by destination, and the assumptions that decide whether it lasts.

Yes, in most of the world; no, in some of it; and the difference is almost entirely where you spend the months. This page works the arithmetic with Digital Backpacker's dated cost estimates and the deterministic model behind the Financial Freedom Travel Calculator. It is an illustration, not advice.

The income side

At a 3.5 percent withdrawal rate, $1,000,000 funds $35,000 a year before tax; at 4 percent, $40,000. Add any pension, rental or part-time income. Subtract fees (0.3 percent on index funds is $3,000 a year on a million) and the tax on withdrawals, which depends on where the money sits and where you are resident. Call it $36,000 to $40,000 of spendable money in the typical case.

The cost side

Comfortable-tier monthly estimates (one-bedroom rent plus living, October 2026): Chiang Mai about $3,300, Siem Reap $3,600, Oaxaca $3,900, Kathmandu $4,100, Tbilisi and Medellín $4,300, Kuala Lumpur $4,900, Mexico City $5,000, Lisbon $5,700, Budapest $5,900, Athens $6,500, Barcelona $7,000, Tokyo $9,000. At mid-range instead of comfortable, subtract 40 percent. The live table below converts this into months covered per year for a $40,000 budget.

Three years that work

  • The Asian year: Chiang Mai (4 months), Da Nang (3), Kuala Lumpur (2), Bali (3). Comfortable tier, about $42,000 including flights, a touch over $40,000; at mid-range, about $27,000 with $13,000 to spare for insurance, flights home and a reserve.
  • The Americas year: Oaxaca (3), Mexico City (3), Medellín (3), Buenos Aires (3). Comfortable tier about $55,000: over budget. Mid-range, about $33,000: comfortably inside.
  • The mixed year: Lisbon in spring (3), Tbilisi in summer (3), Chiang Mai in winter (6). Comfortable about $52,000; mid-range about $32,000.

Pattern: $1 million funds a comfortable life in Asia and a mid-range life in the Americas and southern Europe, with insurance, flights and reserves still to find. It does not fund Tokyo, Barcelona or Lisbon year-round at the comfortable tier.

The things that decide whether it lasts

Healthcare (budget $3,000 to $6,000 a year for international cover at 50; more later), the sequence of returns in the first decade, inflation in the places you live (several destinations in our database have run well above US or EU inflation), currency moves, and the flights home. The calculator's conservative scenario (two points lower return, one point higher inflation) is the one to look at hardest.

What this is not

A promise. A 40-year horizon on $1 million at 4 percent fails in a meaningful share of historical sequences; the Monte Carlo on the calculator shows the spread under your own assumptions. Flexibility (cheaper months when markets fall) is the real safety margin, and travel is the easiest place to find it. Take the output to a qualified adviser.
