Can You Retire Early and Travel on $2 Million?

At $70,000 a year the question changes from whether to how comfortably: the destinations that open up, the ones that still strain, and the risks that do not shrink with the portfolio.

Two million dollars at a 3.5 percent withdrawal is $70,000 a year, and at that level the map changes: Western Europe's capitals, Japan and the comfortable tier almost everywhere become year-round options rather than seasons. The risks that do not scale with the portfolio (healthcare continuity, sequence of returns, tax residency, currency) matter at least as much. Figures below are Digital Backpacker's dated estimates and the calculator's deterministic model; nothing is advice.

What opens up

Comfortable-tier monthly estimates against a $5,800 monthly budget: Lisbon ($5,700) and Budapest ($5,900) sit on the line; Athens ($6,500) and Porto ($5,100) are in; Barcelona ($7,000), Kyoto ($8,000) and Tokyo ($9,000) are seasons rather than years. Everything in Asia, the Americas and the Caucasus is comfortably inside with margin for flights, insurance and the occasional splurge. The live table below shows months covered per year for a $70,000 budget.

What the margin buys

At $1 million the plan has to be clever; at $2 million it can be kind: a serviced apartment instead of a studio, business-class on the two long flights a year, a private driver in the places where that is the sensible way around, a month in Kyoto without counting, and the capacity to fly home for a family emergency without rebuilding the year.

The risks that do not shrink

  • Healthcare continuity: international cover at 55 to 65 costs $5,000 to $12,000 a year and gets harder to buy; pre-existing conditions complicate everything. Several residence visas require specific policies.
  • Sequence of returns: a 30 percent drawdown in year two takes $600,000 from $2 million just as it took $300,000 from $1 million; the proportional damage is identical and the recovery depends on cutting spending, which is easier for travellers than for homeowners.
  • Tax residency: larger portfolios draw more attention; exit taxes, trailing residency rules and the taxation of foreign-sourced income in the new country of residence (Thailand's 2024 change, Portugal's 2024 change) need professional planning.
  • Currency: a dollar portfolio against a euro life is a 10 to 20 percent swing over a few years in either direction.
  • Longevity: retiring at 45 means a 45-year horizon; the 4 percent studies were built on 30. The calculator lets you set 50 or 60 years and shows what it costs.

Keeping a home

At this level many FIRE travellers keep a base: healthcare and tax anchor, somewhere for the things, a place to land. It costs $15,000 to $40,000 a year in most Western cities and converts "travel forever" into "live in two or three places", which most people find more sustainable past the first few years. See FIRE travel vs expat retirement.

Run it properly

Enter your real figures in the calculator with the conservative scenario and the Monte Carlo on, a 45-year horizon, a healthcare line that rises with age, and fees and taxes that match your accounts. Then take it to an adviser who knows both your current and your intended country.
