Best Gap-Year Destinations

Where a year makes the most sense: cheap enough to last, safe enough to relax, social enough to never be alone, with legal work or study on offer.

The best gap-year destinations do four things: they cost little per day, they are safe enough that parents sleep, they are social enough that a solo 19-year-old is never lonely for long, and they offer something to do besides travel: a course, a job, a volunteer placement. Our database scores gap-year fit for every destination (editorial, out of five) with a written reason; these are the fives and strong fours.

Southeast Asia: the default, for good reasons

Chiang Mai (TEFL courses, Muay Thai camps, volunteering, $26 a day), Bangkok as the hub, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City for English-teaching work (a degree and a TEFL certificate are the usual requirements), Bali for surf and dive instructor courses, Siem Reap for vetted NGO volunteering. The region's weakness for gap years is legal work: outside teaching, there is very little.

Latin America: the language year

Antigua Guatemala is the Spanish-school capital of the Americas, with one-to-one lessons and homestays for under $300 a week. Oaxaca and Mexico City add culture and a huge expat scene; Medellín salsa, Spanish and a long visa; Cusco volunteering in the Sacred Valley and the trek of a lifetime; Buenos Aires working-holiday agreements with many European and Commonwealth countries (not the US).

The working-holiday countries

Australia, New Zealand and Canada are not in our destination database yet, but they are where most gap years earn their money: hospitality, farm work, ski resorts, with wages that fund the rest of the year. Seoul and Tokyo offer working-holiday visas to many nationalities (Korea includes US citizens; Japan does not), language programmes and extraordinary safety. Check your passport in the finder.

Europe on a budget

Budapest, Prague and Tbilisi are the affordable social capitals; Lisbon and Barcelona have Erasmus-scale student scenes and language schools, and EU citizens can work freely anywhere in the Union. Non-EU passports hit the 90-in-180 Schengen limit, which makes Georgia, Albania and Turkey useful pauses.

Africa and the Himalaya

Cape Town runs the largest volunteering and conservation sector on the continent (vet carefully) alongside surf, hiking and a sociable hostel scene; Kathmandu offers trekking, a 150-day annual visa allowance and established volunteering, for the cheapest daily spend in this catalogue.
