Best Countries for FIRE Travelers

Ranked by what a financially independent traveller needs: a legal long-stay route, private healthcare, costs that stretch a portfolio, and a life worth living.

This ranking is editorial, built from four things that can be checked: a documented residence route for people with income or savings rather than a job, private healthcare of international standard, comfortable-tier costs from our database, and the lifestyle notes our desk wrote for FIRE travellers on each destination. It is a starting list for research, not a recommendation to move anywhere.

1. Portugal

The D7 passive-income visa is the most established route in Western Europe, healthcare is excellent, English is widespread and Lisbon, Porto and Madeira offer three different lives. Costs have risen (Lisbon comfortable tier about $5,700 a month in our estimate) but remain below Northern Europe. Tax regimes changed in 2024; take advice.

2. Malaysia

Malaysia My Second Home (tiers revised in 2024) is one of Asia's oldest retirement visas; Kuala Lumpur's private hospitals are world-class and cheap; English is universal; the comfortable tier runs about $4,900 a month. Equatorial weather is the trade.

3. Thailand

Retirement (O-A, O-X) and Long-Term Resident visas, Bangkok and Chiang Mai's hospitals, the lowest comfortable-tier costs in this list ($3,300 in Chiang Mai), a huge retiree community and a 2024 change to how remitted foreign income is taxed that needs professional reading.

4. Mexico

The Temporary Resident visa (income or savings thresholds set per consulate), excellent private hospitals in the cities, the Americas' time zones, and costs from Oaxaca's $3,900 to Mexico City's $5,000. Safety varies by state; read the advisories by state, not by headline.

5. Spain

The non-lucrative visa for people with passive income, first-rate healthcare, Las Palmas for a warm winter inside the EU, and a Mediterranean culture built around long lunches. Barcelona is expensive ($7,000 comfortable); the Canaries and smaller cities are not.

6. Colombia

A pension visa, Medellín's eternal spring and private hospitals, Visa V for those still earning remotely, and costs around $4,300 comfortable. Urban crime requires a settled routine.

7. Georgia

A year visa-free for most Western passports, cheap private clinics, a 1 percent regime for small businesses, Tbilisi at $4,300 comfortable and the Caucasus for weekends. Winters are cold, summers hot, and the political climate needs watching.

8. South Africa

The retired person visa, Cape Town's extraordinary setting and private healthcare, Europe's time zone and comfortable-tier costs around $5,600. The safety routines are real and manageable.

Honourable mentions

Albania (a year for Americans, Schengen-free, cheap), Cambodia (ER visa, dollarised, very cheap, thin healthcare), Indonesia (retirement KITAS, Bali's villas), Greece (FIP visa, Athens' low rents), Hungary (White Card for the still-working), Japan and Korea (superb for extended visits, no retirement route).

The live table below shows how many months a year a $40,000 travel budget covers in each destination at the comfortable tier; run your own figure in the calculator and check every visa line in the finder.
