Backpacking After 40

The budgets, the routes and the hostels work the same; the priorities shift. What changes in your forties, what does not, and the places where mature independent travel thrives.

The average age in a good hostel's private rooms is higher than most people expect, and rising. Backpacking in your forties looks like backpacking at 25 with better shoes, a private room more often, and a clearer idea of what you want from a place. The money, the routes and the social machinery are the same. The priorities shift, and this guide is about the shifts.

What changes

  • Sleep becomes non-negotiable. A private room in a hostel (roughly twice a dorm bed: $25 to $45 in Asia and Latin America, $70 to $120 in Western Europe by our estimates) keeps the social common room and loses the 3 a.m. door. Guesthouses and homestays are often the same price and better.
  • Recovery takes longer. Night buses twice a week, a trek straight off a flight and a party island in week one are things you did at 25. Build rest days in; the Route Builder's slow pace setting is designed for it.
  • Insurance matters more and costs more. Declare conditions, check the age bands, and buy the evacuation cover.
  • You want the thing itself. Fewer places, longer stays, the cooking class instead of the pub crawl, the market before the museum.

What does not change

The budget (the destination pages' daily figures apply at any age), the welcome in hostels (common rooms are mixed-age everywhere outside the explicit party hostels), the thrill of a border crossing by land, and the fact that most people you meet are also travelling alone.

Where it works best

Our desk's lifestyle-fit notes for older backpackers rate these highest: Chiang Mai (gentle pace, hospitals, a large community over 50), Hoi An (flat, bicycle-friendly, beautiful), Luang Prabang, Kuala Lumpur (English, transit, hospitals), Tokyo and Kyoto, Oaxaca, Lisbon and Porto, Las Palmas and Funchal, Budapest and Prague.

Meeting people

Cooking classes, walking tours, day trips, language schools, volunteering, coworking (nomads skew older than their image) and the smaller hostels. Travellers in their forties and fifties are a large and visible part of the trail in Southeast Asia, Portugal and Mexico; you will not be the only one.

Fitness and preparation

Walk 10 kilometres a day for a month before you leave; it is what the trip will ask. Treks are open to anyone fit who ascends slowly: the Annapurna and Everest Base Camp trails are full of people in their fifties and sixties with porters and sensible itineraries. See independent travel after 50 for the next decade's version.
