Overview

Tbilisi sits in a gorge of the Mtkvari river between a fortress and a mountain, its old town a tumble of crumbling wooden balconies, Persian-style bathhouses and courtyard life, its newer districts a mix of Soviet blocks, art nouveau mansions and glass bridges. The welcome is a year's visa-free stay for most Western passports, a 1 percent tax regime for small freelancers, cheap central apartments and a wine and feasting culture (the supra) that treats guests as sacred. The Caucasus mountains, Kakheti's vineyards and the Black Sea are a marshrutka away.

Why visit

For the easiest long-term stay in the world on paper, a culture unlike anywhere in Europe or Asia, and mountains that rival the Alps at a quarter of the cost.

By travel style

One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.

Backpackers

Cheap hostels in Sololaki, 1-lari khinkali, mountains by marshrutka and the overland road to Armenia and Turkey.

Gap Year Travelers

Volunteering, TEFL and the easiest year-long stay anywhere; Kazbegi and Svaneti for the adventure.

Digital Nomads

A year without paperwork, low taxes for freelancers, cheap flats, a big community; summers are hot and winters cold.

Long-Term World Travelers

The Caucasus crossroads: Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey overland, Central Asia by cheap flight.

FIRE Travelers

Low costs and a year's stay; healthcare is adequate privately, and residence permits are available for property owners and others.

Career Break Travelers

Wine courses, Georgian language, trekking in Svaneti and Tusheti, and a feast culture that stops the clock.

Older Backpackers

Charming and cheap, with good guesthouses; hills, steps and pavements take energy, and the mountains want a car and driver.

Practical

Safety

Low crime. Traffic and crumbling pavements are the physical hazards; political demonstrations on Rustaveli Avenue can be large and are usually announced.

Common scams

Few. Occasional taxi overcharging (use Bolt), and bars in the old town with tourist price lists.

Connectivity and remote work

Good fibre (50 to 200 Mbps) in most apartments and cafes; coworking at Impact Hub, Terminal, Lokal and others; the community is large and well organised online.

The nomad world's easiest visa, the Individual Entrepreneur 1 percent tax regime (consult an accountant), cheap apartments, cafes and coworking, and a long-established community; summer heat and the 2022-era rent rise are the caveats.

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Language

Georgian (its own alphabet); Russian widely understood by older people, English by the young. The nomad scene runs in English.

Cultural etiquette

Guests are 'from God': accept food and toasts, never refuse a supra invitation lightly, dress modestly in churches (headscarves for women), and avoid politics about Russia unless invited.

Insurance and health

Private clinics (Aversi, Evex, MediClub) are good value; insurance recommended; mountain rescue cover for the Caucasus.

Visa information

One year visa-free for citizens of around 95 countries; no visa paperwork at all for most readers of this site.
