Overview

Prague survived the twentieth century with its medieval and baroque centre intact, and the result is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, swamped by visitors in its Old Town and surprisingly calm two tram stops away. Vinohrady, Zizkov, Holesovice and Karlin are where people actually live: parks, beer gardens, the best pour of pilsner on earth, cafes with a Habsburg lineage and apartments that remain affordable by Western standards. The tech scene is real and the transit is flawless.

Why visit

For beauty by the square kilometre, a world-leading beer culture, central position in Europe and a quality of life that outruns its price.

Where to stay

Old Town and Mala Strana for the fairy tale (and the prices), Vinohrady for parks and cafes, Zizkov for pubs and value, Holesovice and Karlin for converted industrial cool and nomads, Smichov for river and transit.

Food

Svickova, goulash with dumplings, roast pork and sauerkraut, fried cheese for the brave, chlebicky open sandwiches, trdelnik (a tourist invention, enjoy it anyway), and beer: Pilsner Urquell unpasteurised at Lokal, the tank beer pubs, the microbreweries of Zizkov and Holesovice.

By travel style

One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.

Backpackers

Cheap beer, cheap transit, great hostels and a position at the centre of Europe's rail map.

Gap Year Travelers

TEFL teaching has a long history here; universities and language schools draw international students.

Digital Nomads

Infrastructure and community are excellent; the non-EU visa route is bureaucratic and winters are dark.

Long-Term World Travelers

A hub between Berlin, Vienna, Krakow and Budapest by cheap, frequent trains.

FIRE Travelers

Affordable, cultured and safe with good healthcare; long-term residence for non-EU retirees is harder than in southern Europe.

Career Break Travelers

Czech courses at Charles University, beer and cooking culture, and the hiking of Bohemian Switzerland.

Older Backpackers

Flawless trams, a compact centre, concerts every night and calm neighbourhoods: cobbles are the only obstacle.

Practical

Safety

Very safe. Pickpockets on tram 22, Charles Bridge and in the Old Town; currency-exchange fraud in the centre; stag-party nightlife in the Old Town at weekends.

Common scams

Street money changers (never), exchange booths with hidden rates (check the 'we sell' column), taxi overcharging (apps only), and restaurants with 'cover' and service charges in Old Town Square.

Connectivity and remote work

Excellent fibre; coworking at Impact Hub, Locus, Opero, Node5, WorkLounge and many cafes; a major tech and start-up city.

A well-established expat and nomad city with fast internet, cheap transit, a strong tech sector and affordable neighbourhoods; the visa route for non-EU freelancers is the obstacle, and winters are long.

Long-stay visa
Schengen 90/180; Zivno freelance visa; limited digital nomad programme

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Language

Czech; English widely spoken in the centre and among younger people; German useful with older generations.

Cultural etiquette

Greet with dobry den, remove shoes in homes, do not confuse the Czech Republic with Chechnya or Slovakia, tip by rounding up 10 percent, keep quiet after 10 p.m. in residential streets, and never put ice in beer.

Insurance and health

High-quality healthcare (Motol, Canadian Medical, Unicare for expats); insurance for non-EU visitors.

Visa information

Schengen 90/180; Czechia's freelance (Zivno) visa and the limited Digital Nomad programme are the long-stay routes, both bureaucratic.
