Resumen

Playa del Carmen is the Riviera Maya's practical town: a walkable grid on a Caribbean beach, a ferry to Cozumel, cenotes and Mayan ruins in every direction, and a long-stay community of nomads, retirees and dive instructors who chose it over Cancun's resorts and Tulum's prices. Fifth Avenue is a tourist strip; a few blocks inland the town is ordinary Mexico with good tacos, and the beaches to the north are quiet.

Por qué visitarlo

For a Caribbean beach life with Mexican prices and infrastructure, cenote diving, and Mayan sites that are among the Americas' best.

Dónde alojarse

Centro north of Calle 30 for walkable local life, Playacar for gated calm, Coco Beach for the quieter north end, the streets around Calle 38 for cafes and nomads, and Puerto Morelos or Akumal for small-town alternatives.

Comida

Cochinita pibil, fish tacos, ceviche, sopa de lima, panuchos and salbutes, the Thursday night market, El Fogon's tacos al pastor, and a Yucatecan cuisine that deserves more credit than the resort buffets give it.

Por estilo de viaje

Una base de datos de destinos, siete vistas. La puntuación de compatibilidad es editorial, sobre cinco.

Mochileros

Pricier than inland Mexico but the hostels are social, the cenotes cheap and the buses go everywhere; Bacalar and Holbox are the quieter alternatives.

Viajeros de año sabático

Dive-master courses are the classic gap-year investment here, with hostel and dive-shop work in season.

Nómadas digitales

Beach, fibre, US time zones, coworking and a community; the seaweed and hurricane seasons set the calendar.

Viajeros del mundo a largo plazo

The Caribbean beach stop on the Mexico-to-Central-America route, with buses to Belize and Guatemala.

Viajeros FIRE

A big retiree community, good private hospitals and the Temporary Resident path; summers are hot and the sargassum is unpredictable.

Viajeros en pausa profesional

Learn to dive (cenotes are a world specialty), freedive, kitesurf or just swim every day.

Mochileros mayores

Flat, walkable, warm and well served, with condos and hotels for every budget; cenote steps and summer heat are the cautions.

Práctico

Seguridad

The town is safe for the millions who visit; cartel-related incidents have occurred in nightlife venues, so choose bars carefully and avoid drugs entirely; petty theft on beaches; rip currents and sargassum in season.

Estafas frecuentes

Timeshare presentations, 'free' tours, taxi overcharging (agree before boarding; there is no Uber here), ATM skimming and dynamic currency conversion, and dive shops without proper certification.

Conectividad y trabajo remoto

Fibre in most apartments (50 to 200 Mbps); coworking at Nest, Bunker, Selina and cafes; Telcel 4G/5G is good in town.

A long-established beach nomad base with US time zones, fibre, coworking and a sociable scene; sargassum, hurricanes and seasonal rent swings are the practical issues, and Tulum is pricier for less.

Beachwear stays on the beach, tip 10 to 15 percent, respect cenote rules (no sunscreen in the water), and support Mayan-run businesses in the villages.

Seguro y salud

Private hospitals (Hospiten, Costamed) are good and expensive; dive insurance (DAN) for divers; hurricane cover in season.
