Marrakech
The red city: medina, mountains and desert three hours from Europe.
Save
Overview
Marrakech is the sensory overload Europe keeps on its doorstep: the Jemaa el-Fna square at dusk, the souks' kilometres of lanes, riads hidden behind blank walls, and the snow-capped Atlas on the skyline. Budget airlines make it a long weekend from London or Paris; the longer-stay traveller finds a riad room for the price of a European hostel bed, day trips to Berber villages and the Agafay desert, and a base for the coast at Essaouira and the Sahara at Merzouga.
Why visit
For an entirely different continent a short flight from Europe, hospitality that is a cultural institution, and prices that reward patience and bargaining.

Where to stay
Riads in the medina (ask for a quiet derb and a clear route from a landmark), Gueliz in the new town for apartments, cafes and a normal street life, the Palmeraie for pool resorts.
Neighbourhoods
Medina (riads, souks, Jemaa el-Fna), Gueliz (new town, cafes, apartments), Hivernage (hotels, nightlife), Kasbah and Mellah (historic sites, quieter), Palmeraie (resorts).
Food
Tagines and couscous (Friday), tangia (slow-cooked in the hammam embers), the Jemaa el-Fna food stalls (number 14 and 31 have followings), Mechoui Alley's roast lamb, msemen pancakes for breakfast, and the new town's French-Moroccan restaurants. Amal Centre trains disadvantaged women and serves excellent lunches.
Getting around
Walk the medina (download an offline map), petit taxis with the meter, the airport bus (19), Supratours and CTM buses to Essaouira (3 hours) and the desert, ONCF trains to Casablanca and Fez.
Things to do
By travel style
One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.
Cheap riad dorms, the Atlas and the Sahara on group trips, and Essaouira and Taghazout down the coast: Morocco is the budget route out of Europe.
Arabic and French courses, surf camps on the coast, and volunteering through established NGOs; a different continent for the price of Spain.
Gueliz apartments and cafes work; the summer heat and a smaller community send most nomads to Taghazout or Essaouira.
The African beginning of many overland routes and the ferry link to Spain through Tangier.
Low costs and a short flight to European healthcare; the residence permit process and the summer heat are the obstacles.
Toubkal trek, cooking classes, Arabic study, desert nights, and a hammam habit.
A good riad in a quiet derb, a guide for the first medina day and a driver for the Atlas make Marrakech a rich, manageable stay; avoid July and August.
Practical
Safety
Low violent crime; the medina is safe to walk by day and reasonably at night on main lanes. Pickpockets in crowds, scooter drivers in narrow lanes, and persistent hassle are the issues; firm, polite refusals work.
Common scams
Unofficial 'guides' who lead you astray and demand payment, 'the square is that way' redirections into shops, henna artists grabbing hands, snake charmers and monkey handlers charging for photos, taxi drivers refusing the meter, and tannery 'tours'. Say 'la, shukran' and keep walking.
Connectivity and remote work
Riads and cafes in Gueliz have decent fibre (30 to 100 Mbps); medina Wi-Fi is weaker. Coworking in Gueliz (Emerging Business Factory, several cafes); 4G is good.
Better than expected for remote work from Gueliz, with cheap monthly apartments and a small but real community; the heat of summer and medina internet are the limits. Essaouira and Taghazout have more established nomad scenes.

Language
Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and Amazigh; French is the lingua franca of commerce; English growing fast in tourism.
Cultural etiquette
Dress modestly (shoulders and knees) especially in the medina, ask before photographing people, use the right hand, accept mint tea when offered, bargain with humour, do not enter mosques (non-Muslims are barred except Casablanca's Hassan II), and respect Ramadan daylight hours.
Insurance and health
Private clinics in Gueliz (Clinique Internationale) are good; serious issues go to Casablanca or Europe.
Visa information
90 days visa-free for most Western passports; longer stays mean a residence permit or a trip out and back.
