Antigua Guatemala
Three volcanoes, a ruined colonial capital and the cheapest Spanish lessons in the Americas.

Genel bakış
Antigua was Spain's capital of Central America until earthquakes persuaded the colonists to move it in 1773, leaving a grid of cobbled streets, ruined churches and painted facades under three volcanoes. It is the backpacker and language-school capital of the region: one-to-one Spanish for a few dollars an hour, homestays with families, Acatenango's overnight climb to watch Fuego erupt, and Lake Atitlan two hours away. It is also safe, walkable and increasingly popular with nomads and retirees.
Neden ziyaret edilmeli
For Spanish immersion at unbeatable prices, volcanoes you can climb this week, and a colonial town that is a pleasure to live in.

Nerede kalınır
The centre within six blocks of the Parque Central for everything, San Pedro El Alto and Jocotenango for cheaper longer stays, homestays through the language schools for immersion, and Lake Atitlan's villages for the next chapter.
Mahalleler
Centro (everything within six blocks), San Pedro El Alto (hillside, views), Jocotenango (local, cheaper), San Miguel Escobar (coffee farms), the lake villages.
Yiyecek
Pepian (Guatemala's national stew), kak'ik, chiles rellenos, tamales on Saturdays, rellenitos, street-corner shucos, the Mercado Central's comedores, excellent coffee from the surrounding farms, and an expat restaurant scene from Thai to Argentine.
Ulaşım
Walkable town; chicken buses to Guatemala City (cheap, crowded), tourist shuttles to Atitlan, Lanquin and the airport, Uber in town and to the city, and tuk-tuks for short hops.
Yapılacak şeyler
Seyahat tarzına göre
Tek bir destinasyon veritabanı, yedi farklı görünüm. Uyum, beş üzerinden editoryal bir puandır.
The Central American backpacker capital: cheap hostels, Spanish schools, Acatenango and the lake, and shuttles onward to Semuc Champey, Flores and the borders.
Spanish immersion with a homestay for under $300 a week, then volunteering through vetted organisations: the classic gap-year investment.
Charming and cheap with a small community; internet reliability and nightlife are modest, Atitlan's San Marcos is the alternative.
The hub of the Central American overland route from Mexico to Panama.
Low costs, a large retiree community, spring weather all year and Guatemala's pensionado residence option; healthcare is in the capital.
Kariyer molası veren gezginler
Learn Spanish properly in three months, climb volcanoes, volunteer, and live in a postcard.
Cobbles and altitude aside, Antigua is gentle, safe and full of comfortable small hotels; Spanish classes attract plenty of students over 50.
Pratik
Güvenlik
Antigua is far safer than the capital; walk main streets at night, use tourist shuttles rather than chicken buses after dark, and climb volcanoes with guides (robberies on unguided trails have happened). Fuego's eruptions are real; follow guide instructions.
Yaygın dolandırıcılıklar
Few; overpriced 'private' shuttles, and tuk-tuk fares that need agreeing first.
Bağlantı ve uzaktan çalışma
Reasonable fibre in cafes and better apartments (20 to 80 Mbps), with occasional outages; coworking at Impact Hub Antigua and several cafes; 4G is fine in town.
A small, friendly nomad scene on US Central time with cheap living, Spanish on tap and volcanoes for weekends; internet is adequate rather than fast, and the town is quiet by 10 p.m.

Editorial assessment (October 2026).
Dil
Spanish (clear, slow, the reason the schools are here) and Kaqchikel in the villages; English in tourism.
Kültürel görgü kuralları
Greet everyone (buenos dias), dress modestly in churches, ask before photographing Maya women in traditional dress, and respect Semana Santa's religious character.
Sigorta ve sağlık
Private clinics in Antigua handle routine care; Guatemala City's private hospitals for anything serious; altitude and volcano treks need the right cover.
Vize bilgisi
90 days on arrival for most Western passports under the CA-4 agreement (shared with Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua); extensions in Guatemala City.
