Thailand
The backpacker gateway to Asia for fifty years and still the easiest first long trip: cheap, safe by regional standards, superbly connected by bus, train and budget airline, with islands in the south, mountains in the north and a capital that works around the clock.
Entry and visas
Many nationalities enter visa-exempt for a set number of days under Thailand's visa exemption scheme; extensions are handled at immigration offices for a fee. The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) introduced in 2024 is aimed at remote workers and long-stay visitors. Rules change often: check the Thai e-Visa site or your nearest Thai embassy before travel.

Safety
Violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are road traffic (Thailand has one of the world's highest road death rates, and scooter accidents are the top cause of tourist injury), drink spiking in party areas, and seasonal flooding. The far southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and parts of Songkhla carry long-running government travel warnings.
Official advisory: Thailand - Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions (U.S. Department of State, ). UK FCDO advice ↗
Health
Dengue is present year-round and peaks in the rainy season; mosquito protection matters more than any vaccine. Private hospitals in Bangkok and Chiang Mai are excellent and relatively inexpensive, which is why comprehensive travel insurance is still worth carrying.
Money
ATMs charge a flat withdrawal fee of around 220 baht on foreign cards, so withdraw larger amounts less often. Cards are accepted in cities; markets, songthaews and street food are cash only. PromptPay QR is everywhere but needs a Thai bank account.
Tipping: Not expected; rounding up or 20 to 50 baht for good service is common · Tap water: Not recommended; bottled or filtered water is standard
Getting around
Overnight trains and government buses link the whole country; AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion fly most domestic routes for under 50 USD if booked ahead. Grab works in every city. The Bangkok BTS and MRT make the capital easy without taxis.
SIMs and connectivity
AIS, TrueMove and dtac tourist SIMs are sold at the airport and 7-Eleven; eSIMs from the same operators are available online. Coverage is strong everywhere except deep jungle and small islands.
