Mexico

The Americas' great long-stay country: a world capital, colonial highland cities, two coastlines, food that UNESCO protects, and an entry stamp that can run to 180 days. Mexico is where many North American nomads and early retirees start, and where many stay.

Entrada y visados

Visitors from the US, Canada, the EU, UK, Japan and many other countries need no visa; an immigration officer grants up to 180 days on the FMM, though shorter periods (often 30 to 90 days) are now common and the days granted are at the officer's discretion. Temporary Resident visas (one to four years) require proof of income or savings and are applied for at a consulate abroad; they are the standard route for stays beyond six months.

Seguridad

Risk varies enormously by state. Mexico City, Oaxaca, Yucatán and the main tourist corridors are visited by millions without incident; several northern and Pacific states carry high-level government warnings about cartel violence. Read the state-by-state advisories rather than the country headline. Petty theft on crowded transit and express kidnapping via rogue taxis (use apps) are the urban concerns.

Salud

Good private hospitals in major cities; pharmacies with on-site doctors handle routine issues cheaply. Dengue on the coasts; altitude in Mexico City (2,240 m). Travel insurance recommended.

Dinero

Pesos; cards accepted in cities, cash in markets and small towns. Bank ATMs (BBVA, Banorte, Santander) charge 30 to 90 pesos per withdrawal; decline the dynamic currency conversion.

Propinas: 10 to 15 percent in restaurants; small tips for baggers, attendants and musicians · Agua del grifo: Not drinkable; bottled or filtered (garrafones) everywhere

Cómo moverse

Executive buses (ADO, ETN, Primera Plus) are among the best in the world; Volaris, VivaAerobus and Aeroméxico fly cheaply. Uber and DiDi in cities. The Tren Maya connects the Yucatán peninsula.

SIM y conectividad

Telcel has the best coverage; AT&T Mexico is a cheaper alternative in cities. Tourist SIMs and eSIMs are easy; OXXO shops sell top-ups.
