Granite, port wine and the Douro: Lisbon's grittier, cheaper northern rival.

Porto is the city many Lisbon nomads moved to when the capital's rents doubled, and the city many travellers prefer anyway: a tumble of tiled houses down to the Douro, the port lodges of Gaia across the water, a food culture built on francesinhas and tripe, and the river valley's vineyards an hour upstream. It is…

Seven hills, Atlantic light and Europe's most established nomad capital.

Lisbon became the reference European nomad city in the late 2010s and has paid the price in rents, but the reasons remain: 300 days of sun, a walkable centre of tiled facades and miradouros, surf beaches thirty minutes away by train, a D8 visa that actually works and a city that is still, by Western European…

Beach, Gaudi, late nights and a city that has decided how many of you it wants.

Barcelona has everything a long-stay traveller asks for: a beach inside the city, a grid of neighbourhoods with their own squares and markets, Gaudi's improbable buildings, mountains behind, Mediterranean food at long lunches and a nightlife that starts at midnight. It also has Europe's most organised resistance to…

Portugal at walking pace

The route starts in Porto, with its riverside Ribeira district, port lodges across the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia and day trips up the Douro Valley. A fast train runs south to Lisbon, which repays a longer stay: the hilltop neighbourhoods of Alfama and Graca, the monuments of Belem and easy rail day trips to Sintra and Cascais. From Lisbon a bus or train reaches the Algarve, where Lagos is a base for coastal walks along the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade and the Fishermen's Trail.

Andalusia

A bus crosses the border to Seville, the largest of the Andalusian cities, with its cathedral, the Real Alcazar and Plaza de Espana. A short high-speed train ride leads to Cordoba and its Mosque-Cathedral, then on to Granada, where the Alhambra dominates the city. Alhambra tickets are timed and often sell out weeks ahead in busy months. Spring brings orange blossom and festivals; autumn is quieter and still warm, and the evenings are long enough for tapas bars and late dinners.

The Mediterranean coast

From Granada the train journey to Valencia usually connects through Madrid. Valencia combines the old town, the Turia gardens built in a former riverbed and the City of Arts and Sciences, and it is the home of paella. The last leg runs up the coast by train to Barcelona, for Gaudi's architecture, the Gothic Quarter and the beaches. Staying a week in each place leaves time for neighbourhood life rather than a checklist, and apartment kitchens make the local markets part of the trip.

Practical notes

Visas: Portugal and Spain are in the Schengen Area; many non-EU visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180, and this route uses about 60. The EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU travellers at the border, and the ETIAS travel authorisation is scheduled to follow; check the official EU source. Transport: Mostly trains; the Lisbon to Lagos and Lagos to Seville legs are simplest by bus. Spanish high-speed tickets are usually cheaper when booked ahead. Weather: April, May, September and October avoid the heat of July and August in Seville and Cordoba, which often passes 40C. Budget: The mid figure assumes a one-bedroom apartment or mid-range hotel at each stop, restaurant meals most days, entry tickets and standard-class trains. Safety: Generally low-risk; pickpocketing is common in central Barcelona and Lisbon, especially on trams and the metro.
