Cultural Triangle and Kandy

The route opens in Colombo and heads inland to Sigiriya, the usual base for the Cultural Triangle. The fifth-century rock fortress, the painted cave temples at Dambulla and the ruined royal city of Polonnaruwa are all reachable by bus, tuk-tuk or bicycle within a day. Kandy follows, a lakeside city built around the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya on its outskirts.

The train to Ella and the wildlife south

The Kandy to Ella line climbs through tea estates around Nuwara Eliya before descending towards Ella, and it is one of the most popular rail journeys in Asia. Reserved seats sell out well ahead in peak months; unreserved carriages are the fallback. Ella itself is a walking base, with Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock and the Nine Arch Bridge all reachable on foot. From there the road drops to Tissamaharama, the gateway town for jeep safaris in Yala National Park, known for leopards, elephants and sloth bears. Udawalawe National Park, further west, is the usual alternative for elephant sightings with smaller crowds.

The south coast and Galle

The final week is coastal. Mirissa is the main departure point for whale-watching boats, with blue whales most often recorded between roughly December and April, and the beaches between Weligama and Tangalle offer surfing, swimming and snorkelling depending on sea conditions. The route ends in Galle, whose fortified old town, built by the Portuguese and extended by the Dutch, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ramparts, churches, museums and cafes inside the walls. The Southern Expressway links Galle with Colombo and the international airport.

Practical notes

Visas: Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or visa arranged before arrival. The system and fees have changed several times in recent years, so the official Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration source is the one to check. Transport: Trains link Colombo, Kandy and Ella; buses and tuk-tuks cover the other legs, and many travellers hire a car with driver for the Cultural Triangle and the run down to Yala. Weather: December to March is the dry season on the west and south coasts and in the hill country; the southwest monsoon brings rain to the same areas from about May to September, when the east coast is the drier side. Budget: The mid figure assumes private guesthouse rooms, reserved train seats, one Yala jeep safari, a whale-watching trip and entry to Sigiriya and the main temples; site entry tickets are a significant share of costs. Safety: Road traffic is the main everyday risk. Swimming conditions vary by beach and season and currents can be strong. Government travel advisories are worth checking before departure.
