Helsinki and the Baltic crossing
Strictly speaking Finland is Nordic rather than Scandinavian, but Helsinki makes a natural starting point: a design-focused harbour city with the Suomenlinna sea fortress a short ferry ride offshore. The overnight ferry to Stockholm sails through the Finnish and Swedish archipelagos and doubles as a night's accommodation. Stockholm spreads across fourteen islands, with the old town of Gamla Stan, the Vasa Museum and archipelago boats for day trips.
Copenhagen and Oslo
Trains run south to Copenhagen in around five hours. The Danish capital is built for cycling and walking, with harbour swimming spots, the Nyhavn canal and Tivoli Gardens. The next leg runs north through Gothenburg to Oslo, where the waterfront opera house, the Munch museum and the Bygdoy peninsula museums are all within easy reach of the centre.
The fjords
The Bergen Line climbs from Oslo onto the Hardangervidda plateau, one of the highest rail routes in northern Europe. At Myrdal the steep Flam Railway descends into the village of Flam at the head of the Aurlandsfjord, close to the narrow, UNESCO-listed Naeroyfjord. In summer an express boat continues along the Sognefjord via Balestrand, a small village known for its wooden hotel and orchards, before the final run to Bergen. Bergen's Bryggen wharf, fish market and Floyen funicular close the trip. Bergen has an airport with European connections, and the Hurtigruten coastal ships sail north from here for anyone extending the journey along the Norwegian coast.
Practical notes
Visas: all four countries are in the Schengen Area, so the whole route counts towards one short-stay allowance. Most Western passports currently enter without a visa for short stays, but the EU Entry/Exit System registers non-EU travellers at Schengen external borders, and the ETIAS pre-travel authorisation is scheduled to follow; check the official EU and national sources before travel. Transport: national rail operators sell tickets that are cheapest in advance; the Interrail or Eurail pass is an alternative that requires seat reservations on some trains. The Flam to Bergen express boat is seasonal, so the summer timetable is worth confirming. Weather: June to August brings long days and mild temperatures; western Norway is wet in any month. Budget: the mid figure assumes private hotel rooms or cabins, rail travel booked ahead, a ferry cabin and a mix of supermarket and restaurant meals; this is among the most expensive regions in the world. Safety: all four countries are considered very safe; on fjord hikes, conditions can change quickly. Check current official travel advisories.
