Kuala Lumpur gets skipped on the backpacker trail and that is the opportunity. English is near-universal, the metro and trains work, condominiums with pools and gyms rent for a third of Singapore's prices, the food is a three-way fusion of Malay, Chinese and Indian cooking, and the 90-day visa-free entry for many…

Singapore and Melaka
Singapore starts the route with hawker centres such as Maxwell and Lau Pa Sat, Gardens by the Bay, the neighbourhoods of Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam, and the Southern Ridges walk. Buses run north across the Causeway to Melaka, whose historic centre shares a UNESCO World Heritage listing with George Town. The Dutch-era Stadthuys, the Peranakan shophouses around Jonker Street and the riverside walk make for a compact two days.
Kuala Lumpur and the Cameron Highlands
Kuala Lumpur has the Petronas Twin Towers, the Batu Caves temple complex on the city's northern edge, the Islamic Arts Museum and street food along Jalan Alor and in Kampung Baru. It is also one of the region's established bases for remote workers. The road north climbs to the Cameron Highlands, a hill station from the British colonial era with tea plantations, numbered jungle trails around Tanah Rata and the mossy forest boardwalk near Gunung Brinchang, where temperatures are far cooler than on the coast.
Penang and Langkawi
George Town on Penang Island is known for its street food, clan houses such as Khoo Kongsi, shophouse streets and murals, plus the funicular up Penang Hill and the Kek Lok Si temple. The route ends on Langkawi, an archipelago near the Thai border, with beaches at Pantai Cenang, the Langkawi Sky Bridge reached by cable car and boat trips through the mangroves and limestone of the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park. Langkawi is a duty-free island with flights back to Kuala Lumpur. The east coast Perhentian Islands are an alternative ending between roughly March and October, when the northeast monsoon has passed and island resorts reopen.
Note pratiche
Visas: Many nationalities can enter both countries visa-free for short stays. Singapore and Malaysia each use an online arrival card completed before entry; the official immigration websites of both countries list current requirements. Transport: Long-distance buses link Singapore, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands and Penang, with the electric train service from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth an alternative for the Penang leg. A ferry runs from Penang to Langkawi on a schedule that varies by season. Weather: December to March is usually the driest period on the west coast and Langkawi; the Cameron Highlands are cool year-round with frequent afternoon rain. Budget: The mid figure assumes mid-range hotels, intercity buses, the Penang ferry, the Langkawi cable car and a mangrove boat trip; Singapore is the most expensive stop and accounts for a disproportionate share of costs. Safety: Crime levels are generally low, with petty theft and bag snatching the main concern in cities. Heat, humidity and jellyfish at some beaches are worth noting. Government travel advisories are worth checking before departure.
