The Acropolis above, a city of neighbourhood tavernas and rooftops below, and the islands beyond.

Athens was a city people flew through on the way to the islands; now it is a city people stay in. The reasons: low rents by European capital standards, a cafe and nightlife culture that spills onto the street, Koukaki and Pangrati's neighbourhood life a walk from the Acropolis, the Riviera beaches on the tram line…

Athens and Milos

Athens frames the trip with the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and neighbourhoods such as Plaka and Koukaki, while the ferry port at Piraeus is a metro ride from the centre. Milos, the first island, is volcanic, with white rock formations at Sarakiniko, sea caves at Kleftiko reachable by boat and fishing villages with painted boat garages at Klima.

Paros and Naxos

Paros has a busy port town at Parikia, the harbour village of Naoussa and windsurfing beaches on its east coast. A short ferry crosses to Naxos, the largest Cycladic island, which is greener and more agricultural, with mountain villages such as Halki and Apeiranthos, long sandy beaches south of the main town and the marble Portara gateway at the harbour. Naxos is one of the better-value bases in the Cyclades for a longer stay.

Santorini and Crete

Santorini sits on the rim of a flooded volcanic caldera; the clifftop path from Fira to Oia is a well-known walk, and the island is at its busiest when cruise ships are in. A fast ferry continues south to Heraklion on Crete, with the Minoan palace of Knossos close by. The route ends in Chania, whose Venetian harbour is a base for the Samaria Gorge in season and the beaches of the west coast. Chania's airport and Heraklion's ferry port both connect onward. Because some links between islands are seasonal, the order of Milos and Paros sometimes has to be swapped to match that year's ferry timetables.

Practical notes

Visas: Greece is in the Schengen Area; most Western passports currently enter without a visa for short stays, but the EU Entry/Exit System registers non-EU travellers at Schengen external borders, and the ETIAS pre-travel authorisation is scheduled to follow; check the official EU and national sources before travel. Transport: several operators run the Cyclades and Crete, with the fullest timetables from June to September; some inter-island links are seasonal or run only on certain days, and strong summer winds can delay or cancel sailings. Weather: May, June, September and early October are warm with fewer crowds; July and August are hot, windy and the most expensive. Budget: the mid figure assumes private rooms or small hotels, a mix of conventional and fast ferries, a boat trip on Milos and taverna meals; Santorini accommodation costs well above the other islands. Safety: generally safe; sun exposure and summer wildfires are the main seasonal hazards. Check current official travel advisories.
