Seven hills, Atlantic light and Europe's most established nomad capital.

Lisbon became the reference European nomad city in the late 2010s and has paid the price in rents, but the reasons remain: 300 days of sun, a walkable centre of tiled facades and miradouros, surf beaches thirty minutes away by train, a D8 visa that actually works and a city that is still, by Western European…

Granite, port wine and the Douro: Lisbon's grittier, cheaper northern rival.

Porto is the city many Lisbon nomads moved to when the capital's rents doubled, and the city many travellers prefer anyway: a tumble of tiled houses down to the Douro, the port lodges of Gaia across the water, a food culture built on francesinhas and tripe, and the river valley's vineyards an hour upstream. Mezcal, mole and Zapotec markets in Mexico's most beloved colonial city.

Oaxaca is the Mexico that travellers fall for: a green-stone colonial centre, a Zapotec and Mixtec cultural heartland, the markets of 20 de Noviembre and Benito Juarez, seven moles, the mezcal villages of the valley, Monte Alban's mountaintop ruins and a Day of the Dead that is the most moving in the country. It is…

Months one and two: Europe to the Caucasus and the Himalaya

Lisbon and Porto (10 nights) in the September light, a flight to Tbilisi (10) for wine season and Kazbegi, Istanbul (6) on the way east, then Kathmandu (18) for a tea-house trek in the October skies: the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp.

Months three and four: Southeast Asia

Bangkok and Chiang Mai (14) in the cool season, Hanoi to Hoi An (14) in the north's golden months, then Bali (14) as the year turns, with the Gilis or Komodo if the budget allows.

Month five: Japan and the Pacific

Tokyo and Kyoto (14) in late winter or early blossom, then Sydney and the east coast or New Zealand's South Island (18) in the southern late summer.

Month six: the Americas

Fly across the Pacific to Lima and Cusco (18) at the start of the Andean dry season, then Mexico City and Oaxaca (16) before home. Reverse the hemisphere if you start in March.

The money

Flights are the biggest single line: a round-the-world fare or a chain of one-ways on budget carriers both work, and booking the long-hauls three to five months ahead matters more than the ticket type. The daily spend varies by a factor of five between Nepal and Japan; the route is deliberately weighted toward cheap countries.

Notas prácticas

Visas: Georgia (365 days), Turkey (90/180 for most), Nepal (VOA), Thailand (exemption), Vietnam (e-visa in advance), Indonesia (VOA), Japan (90 days), Australia (ETA or eVisitor, apply ahead), New Zealand (NZeTA ahead), Peru and Mexico (stamp): check each in the finder a month before you leave. Insurance: a 6-month policy with trekking to 5,500 m and a hospital-choice clause. Money: two cards from different banks, a fee-free travel card, and a reserve month of funds you do not touch. Season logic: the route chases dry seasons; if you reverse direction, start in March from Mexico.
