The city of eternal spring, a metro that transformed it and South America's biggest nomad scene.

Medellin's story, from the most dangerous city in the world in 1991 to a model of urban reinvention, is the one every visitor hears, and the cable cars, library parks and the metro that tell it are worth a day. The route and its timing

Mexico City and Oaxaca sit in the highlands and are in their dry season from November to April, so the circuit starts there in November and December, when Oaxaca's Day of the Dead build-up and winter festivals take place. Medellin, known for its spring-like climate, follows in January, typically one of its drier months. Lima is grey and damp for much of the year but has its sunny summer from January to March, which is when this route arrives. Buenos Aires in April brings mild autumn weather, and Rio de Janeiro in May is cooler and drier than its humid summer.

Living and working in each city

Every stop has coworking spaces and furnished monthly rentals. In Mexico City the Roma and Condesa neighbourhoods are the usual base; in Medellin it is El Poblado or Laureles. Lima's Miraflores and Barranco sit on the clifftops above the Pacific. Buenos Aires has a long cafe culture, and Palermo is the common choice there, while in Rio most long-stayers rent in Botafogo, Flamengo or near the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. All the cities are within a few hours of US Eastern time, which suits people working North American hours.

Moving between countries

The only overland leg is the bus from Mexico City to Oaxaca. The rest are flights, as the distances in South America are large: Medellin to Lima and Lima to Buenos Aires are each several hours in the air. Spending a month in one place means fewer border crossings in total, and each country's visa-free allowance for many passports comfortably covers a stay of four to five weeks. Spanish is spoken everywhere except Brazil, where Portuguese is the language.

Note pratiche

Visas: Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Argentina allow visa-free tourist stays for most Western passports, with the length set by the officer in some cases. Brazil has required an e-visa for some nationalities, including US, Canadian and Australian passport holders, since 2025. Check each official source before travel. Transport: One long-distance bus and five flights; Oaxaca to Medellin usually connects through Mexico City or Bogota. Weather: Dry season in the Mexican highlands, Lima's summer, and autumn in Buenos Aires and Rio. Budget: The mid figure assumes a furnished one-bedroom rental in a popular neighbourhood, coworking a few days a week, regular restaurant meals and economy flights between cities. Buenos Aires prices have risen sharply since 2024 and can change quickly. Safety: Petty theft and phone snatching are common concerns in all six cities; many long-stayers use ride-hailing apps at night and check local guidance on which areas to avoid.
