Sydney and the Queensland coast
Many working holidaymakers arrive in Sydney, where the first days usually go on admin such as a tax file number, a bank account and a phone plan. The route then flies north to Cairns in the dry, warm spring, for Great Barrier Reef trips and the Daintree rainforest, before working south by coach. Airlie Beach is the departure point for Whitsunday Islands sailing trips, and Hervey Bay is the usual base for visits to K'gari (formerly Fraser Island).
The work block
Bundaberg, a sugar cane and horticulture region in Queensland, is one of many areas where backpackers commonly look for farm work. This route sets aside about ten weeks there, which matches the pattern many travellers follow, but availability depends on the season, the harvest and the employer, and work is never guaranteed. Working hostels in farming towns sometimes help arrange jobs; conditions vary, and Australia's Fair Work Ombudsman publishes minimum pay rates and guidance for visa holders. After the work block the route continues south through Noosa and Byron Bay.
Melbourne and New Zealand
A month in Melbourne in the southern summer fits the hospitality and events season, when cafes, bars and festivals often take on casual staff, again with no guarantee of a job. The final weeks cross the Tasman to New Zealand in its autumn: Auckland, Rotorua's geothermal areas, Wellington, Christchurch and finally Queenstown, a hub for hiking, bungy jumping and Milford Sound. Some travellers hold a separate New Zealand working holiday visa and stay on for the winter ski season.
Practical notes
Visas: Australia and New Zealand each offer working holiday visas to eligible nationalities within set age limits, applied for separately and in advance. In Australia, a second or third year has often depended on completing specified regional work, but rules differ by passport (UK passport holders have been exempt since 2024); check the Department of Home Affairs and Immigration New Zealand. Transport: Domestic flights for the long jumps, long-distance coaches along the Queensland coast, and coaches or a bus pass in New Zealand. Weather: Spring in northern Queensland is dry; from about November the tropical north enters its wet and stinger season. Melbourne's weather is changeable even in summer. Budget: The figures are spending only and exclude any wages earned. The mid figure assumes a mix of hostel private rooms and shared flats, organised trips (reef, Whitsundays, K'gari, Milford Sound) and domestic flights. Safety: Sun exposure, rips at unpatrolled beaches and remote driving are the main hazards; many beaches are patrolled between flags.
