Mountains inside the city limits, the fastest internet on earth, and a 24-hour food culture.

Seoul moves fast: ten million people, a metro that puts most of the world to shame, cafes on every corner serving espresso and ambition, and a night economy that never properly closes. It is also a city of palaces, hanok villages and granite peaks you can hike before breakfast. For long stays it offers safety, speed…

The largest city on earth, and somehow the most orderly.

Tokyo is forty million people organised into villages: Shimokitazawa's vintage shops, Yanaka's temple lanes, Koenji's live houses, Nakameguro's canal cafes, Shinjuku's neon and the hushed back streets of Kagurazaka. Trains arrive to the second, convenience stores sell meals that would embarrass restaurants elsewhere…

The original digital nomad capital, still the gentlest big town in Thailand.

Chiang Mai is a moated old city of three hundred temples ringed by mountains, and for fifteen years it has been the place remote workers go to find out whether the lifestyle suits them. The answer is usually yes: rents are among the lowest of any established nomad hub, the cafe culture is serious, and the Nimman…

The most underrated long-stay city in Asia: modern, multilingual and cheap for what it offers.

Kuala Lumpur gets skipped on the backpacker trail and that is the opportunity. English is near-universal, the metro and trains work, condominiums with pools and gyms rent for a third of Singapore's prices, the food is a three-way fusion of Malay, Chinese and Indian cooking, and the 90-day visa-free entry for many…

Da Nang is a modern, orderly city on a long sweep of beach between Hue and Hoi An, and in a few years it has become one of Asia's fastest-growing remote-work hubs. Surf, rice terraces, temples and the world's most crowded nomad scene.

Bali has been the global nomad and wellness capital for a decade and it shows: Canggu's rice fields have filled with villas, cafes and coworking spaces, Ubud's ridges with yoga studios, and the traffic between them is notorious. How the circuit is shaped

The order is set by weather. Seoul and Tokyo are at their most comfortable in October and November, with clear skies and autumn colour. Chiang Mai follows in December and January, the cool dry months before the smoky burning season that usually arrives around March. Kuala Lumpur is a year-round city with a large expat infrastructure, and central Vietnam around Da Nang and Hoi An typically dries out from February. Bali closes the loop in April, as its wet season tails off.

Working from each base

Every stop has coworking spaces, cafes used as offices and serviced or monthly apartments. Seoul and Tokyo are the most expensive and the most compact; many long-stayers pick a neighbourhood near a metro line rather than the centre. Chiang Mai's Nimman area and Kuala Lumpur's Bangsar and Mont Kiara districts are the usual nomad clusters. Da Nang offers beach apartments with Hoi An's old town a short taxi ride away, and in Bali the coworking scene is concentrated in Canggu and Ubud. Time zones run from UTC+9 in Korea and Japan to UTC+7 or UTC+8 further south, which matters for anyone working to European or American hours.

Borders and visas over six months

Six months in Asia means six separate entry regimes. Most stays here fit within visa-free or e-visa allowances for many Western passports, but some travellers on longer stays use extensions or leave and re-enter, often called visa runs. Rules on repeated entries change and immigration officers can ask about onward plans, so this route keeps each country to a single visit of about a month. A few countries now offer dedicated digital nomad or long-stay visas, which some remote workers use instead.

Notas prácticas

Visas: Japan and South Korea allow visa-free short stays for most Western passports, though Korea may require an electronic travel authorisation (K-ETA) depending on nationality. Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam (e-visa) generally cover a month or more; Indonesia usually issues a visa on arrival or e-visa for Bali. Rules differ by passport and change often, so check each official source before booking. Transport: Seven flights, mostly direct; Tokyo to Chiang Mai and Hoi An to Bali usually connect through a regional hub. Weather: Timed for autumn in Korea and Japan, the cool season in northern Thailand, the dry season in central Vietnam and the start of the dry season in Bali. Budget: The mid figure assumes a private studio or one-bedroom rental at each stop, a coworking membership, local food with some restaurant meals, and economy flights between bases; Korea and Japan account for roughly half of it. Safety: All bases are generally considered low-risk for visitors; scooter accidents are a common cause of injury in Vietnam and Bali, and travel insurance that covers long stays is worth checking.
