The Silk Road cities

Tashkent is the arrival point, with Soviet-era metro stations, the Chorsu bazaar and the Khast Imam complex. The Afrosiyob high-speed train reaches Samarkand in a little over two hours, where the Registan's three tiled madrasas, the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis and the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum of Timur are the highlights. Bukhara, a short train ride further west, has a more intact old centre built around the Kalyan minaret and the Lyabi-Hauz pool, and rewards slow wandering. A longer train crosses the Kyzylkum desert to Khiva, whose walled inner town, Itchan Kala, is compact enough to explore on foot in a day and a half.

The Fergana Valley

From Urgench, near Khiva, a domestic flight returns to Tashkent, and a train crosses the Kamchik pass into the Fergana Valley, the fertile heart of the region. Margilan is known for its silk workshops, where ikat fabric is still dyed and woven by hand, and the pottery town of Rishtan is a short ride away. A shared taxi reaches the Dostuk border crossing and continues to Osh in Kyrgyzstan, one of Central Asia's oldest cities, with the Sulaiman-Too sacred mountain and a sprawling bazaar.

Kyrgyzstan's mountains and lakes

A short flight connects Osh with Bishkek, the leafy Kyrgyz capital. From there shared taxis reach Kochkor, home to a long-running community-based tourism network that arranges homestays and transport into the mountains. Song Kol is a high alpine lake at around 3,000 metres where herders graze animals in summer and travellers stay in yurt camps, by horse or by jeep. The route ends at Karakol, on the eastern end of Issyk Kul, with its wooden Dungan mosque, Russian Orthodox cathedral and trekking into valleys such as Altyn Arashan and Jeti-Oguz.

Practical notes

Visas: Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan both allow visa-free short stays for many Western nationalities, but lists and durations change, so check each country's official e-visa or foreign ministry source. Transport: Uzbek Railways runs the Afrosiyob and regular trains between the Silk Road cities, and tickets sell out in peak months; Urgench to Tashkent is a domestic flight; Kyrgyz travel relies on shared taxis, marshrutkas and hired jeeps, and the Osh to Bishkek road is an alternative to flying of roughly 10 to 12 hours. Weather: May, June and September balance the hot Uzbek plains against the short mountain season; July and August often exceed 40 C in Bukhara and Khiva, and Song Kol yurt camps generally operate from about June to September. Budget: the mid figure assumes private rooms in family guesthouses in Uzbekistan, community-based tourism homestays and yurt camps in Kyrgyzstan, and a hired jeep to Song Kol. Safety: both countries are generally regarded as low-crime for travellers; some governments advise caution near certain border areas in the Fergana Valley, so check your government's current advice and confirm the border crossing is open before travel.
