Las Palmas de Gran CanariaPhoto: Bengt Nyman from Vaxholm, Sweden · CC BY 2.0

Europe's winter nomad capital: a city beach, 22°C in January and Spanish prices.

Las Palmas has the best climate of any city in Europe, a three-kilometre urban beach (Las Canteras) with a reef that keeps it calm, a surf break at the end of it, and a remote-work community that fills the apartments behind the sand every winter. Gran Canaria's interior is a different island of volcanic peaks, pine…

A subtropical island with Europe's first digital nomad village and year-round spring.

Madeira is a volcanic island of levada walks, laurel forests, cliff-edge roads and a capital, Funchal, that runs on gardens, wine and an unusually deliberate remote-work strategy: the Digital Nomads Madeira programme turned the village of Ponta do Sol into a nomad community in 2021 and Funchal followed. The weather…

The Acropolis above, a city of neighbourhood tavernas and rooftops below, and the islands beyond.

Athens was a city people flew through on the way to the islands; now it is a city people stay in. The reasons: low rents by European capital standards, a cafe and nightlife culture that spills onto the street, Koukaki and Pangrati's neighbourhood life a walk from the Acropolis, the Riviera beaches on the tram line…

The Atlantic islands

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has one of the most stable winter climates in Europe, with daytime temperatures commonly in the low 20s C, a long city beach at Las Canteras and a large remote-worker community. Funchal on Madeira is a short flight away and is greener and hillier, with levada walking trails following old irrigation channels through the mountains. Funchal's Christmas lights and New Year's Eve fireworks draw crowds, so December rents there are best arranged early. Both islands have regular bus networks, so a car is optional for most of the stay.

The Algarve and Athens

January on the Algarve is cooler and quieter, but often sunny, and Tavira in the eastern Algarve is a low-key town with a Roman bridge, salt pans and island beaches reached by ferry. A flight connects Faro to Athens, where winter is the least crowded time to see the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and the city's ancient sites, with mild days and occasional rain.

Cyprus and the Schengen question

The final stretch is in Cyprus, which is usually the warmest of these stops in February. Paphos has a UNESCO-listed archaeological park and coastal walks; Limassol is a larger city with a long seafront promenade and a busy cafe scene. Cyprus is an EU member but is not part of the Schengen Area. For non-EU visitors subject to the 90 days in 180 rule, this route keeps the Schengen stops (Spain, Portugal and Greece) to roughly 75 days, with the remainder in Cyprus, which counts separately. EU and EEA citizens are not affected.

Practical notes

Visas: Spain, Portugal and Greece are in the Schengen Area; Cyprus has its own short-stay rules for non-EU visitors and is outside Schengen. The EU's Entry/Exit System now records non-EU entries and exits, so days are tracked automatically. Check the official source for your passport, and for a longer stay some travellers use a national long-stay or digital nomad visa instead. Transport: Five flights (Funchal to Faro and Faro to Athens usually connect through Lisbon) plus short bus or train rides. Weather: Las Palmas and Funchal are mild through winter; the Algarve and Athens are cooler with some rain; Cyprus is typically mild and sunny with rain spells in January. Budget: The mid figure assumes a furnished one-bedroom rental at off-season monthly rates, groceries plus regular meals out, local transport and economy flights. Safety: All stops are generally considered low-risk; Atlantic swells can make some beaches dangerous in winter.
