Seven hills, Atlantic light and Europe's most established nomad capital.

Lisbon became the reference European nomad city in the late 2010s and has paid the price in rents, but the reasons remain: 300 days of sun, a walkable centre of tiled facades and miradouros, surf beaches thirty minutes away by train, a D8 visa that actually works and a city that is still, by Western European…

Beach, Gaudi, late nights and a city that has decided how many of you it wants.

Barcelona has everything a long-stay traveller asks for: a beach inside the city, a grid of neighbourhoods with their own squares and markets, Gaudi's improbable buildings, mountains behind, Mediterranean food at long lunches and a nightlife that starts at midnight. It also has Europe's most organised resistance to…

    SplitPhoto: Silverije · CC BY-SA 3.0

A Roman palace turned living city, with the islands of the Adriatic at the end of the pier.

Split grew inside the retirement palace of the emperor Diocletian, and 1,700 years later the palace is still the centre: cafes in the peristyle, apartments in the walls, the cathedral in his mausoleum. Around it is a confident Dalmatian port city of beaches, the Marjan hill forest, a ferry harbour that serves Hvar…

Sulphur baths, 8,000 vintages, carved balconies and a one-year visa-free welcome.

Tbilisi sits in a gorge of the Mtkvari river between a fortress and a mountain, its old town a tumble of crumbling wooden balconies, Persian-style bathhouses and courtyard life, its newer districts a mix of Soviet blocks, art nouveau mansions and glass bridges. The welcome is a year's visa-free stay for most Western…

    TiranaPhoto: Diego Delso · CC BY-SA 3.0

The Balkans' most colourful capital, a year-long welcome for Americans, and a coast and mountains no one has priced in yet.

Tirana was a closed, grey capital until 1991 and has spent three decades painting itself: pastel apartment blocks, a cafe culture that rivals Italy's, a boulevard of new architecture, a cable car to a mountain, and the Blloku district where the Communist elite once lived now full of bars and coworking spaces. It is…

The logic

Monthly rentals cost 30 to 50 percent less per night than weekly ones and come with the Wi-Fi you actually need; moving once a month keeps the novelty without the churn. The route avoids the Mediterranean coast's August, when prices double and the beaches fill, by spending that month in the Caucasus mountains, and it ends outside Schengen in Albania where the clock does not run.

May: Lisbon

Arroios or Campo de Ourique apartment, a coworking membership (Heden, Second Home), surf mornings at Carcavelos, Sintra and Arrabida at weekends. 30 Schengen days.

June: Barcelona

A room or studio in Gracia or Poblenou, Aticco or Cloudworks for the office, the beach after six, Montserrat and the Costa Brava at weekends. 60 days used.

July: Split

An apartment in Varos or Meje before the August peak, Saltwater Nomads for coworking, islands at weekends: Vis, Brac, Hvar's quieter north. 90 days used: the Schengen allowance is now spent, and the next stops are outside it.

August: Tbilisi

A Vera or Vake apartment, Impact Hub or Terminal to work, Kazbegi and Kakheti at weekends, and cooler mountain air than any beach town offers in August. Georgia's year-long visa-free entry means no paperwork at all.

September: Tirana and the Riviera

Blloku for the city month, with a fortnight in Himara or Dhermi at the end as the sea stays warm and the crowds leave. Albania admits US citizens for a year and others for 90 days outside Schengen.

Practical notes

Schengen: Portugal, Spain and Croatia share the 90/180 allowance; Georgia and Albania do not count. Day 1 in Lisbon to day 90 leaving Split is the budget; the 180-day window then resets the Lisbon days in November. EU citizens ignore all of this. Rentals: book Lisbon and Barcelona two months ahead; Split by March for July; Tbilisi and Tirana a few weeks ahead. Budget: the mid figure assumes 1,000 to 1,500 euros a month in rent plus coworking, eating out half the time, and four flights; the low figure assumes shared flats. Work: all five bases have fibre over 100 Mbps and coworking; Tbilisi's time zone (UTC+4) suits European clients and early US calls.
