The Digital Nomad Annual Circuit

Why experienced nomads move with the seasons in two-month blocks, how to design a year that never has a bad month, and the arithmetic of visas, rents and time zones.

The annual circuit is the pattern the long-term nomads settle into: a small number of bases, visited in their best seasons, in an order that keeps hops short and visas legal. It replaces the exhausting new-city-every-month phase with something closer to a rotating life. This site's Nomad Circuit Builder generates one from your weather, budget, time zone and pace; this guide explains the logic so you can argue with it.

Why two months

Monthly rentals cost 30 to 50 percent less per night than weekly ones and come with the fibre line you actually need. The first week in any city is lost to admin; the second is when work resumes; by the sixth you have friends and a routine. Two months captures the value without the staleness; three is the upper limit for most visas and most attention spans.

Follow the dry season

Each of our destinations carries WMO monthly climate normals, and the builder scores every month against your temperature preference. The pattern that emerges: mainland Southeast Asia from November to February, the Americas' highland cities almost any time, the Mediterranean in May, June and September, the Atlantic islands (Madeira, the Canaries) in the northern winter, Cape Town from November to March, the Caucasus in high summer when the coast is overrun. The six preset circuits on the tool page are built this way.

Keep the hops short

Long flights cost money, a working week and your sleep. The builder penalises distance between consecutive stops; a good circuit stays within a region for half the year and crosses an ocean once or twice. Chiang Mai to Da Nang to Bali, Mexico City to Medellín to Buenos Aires, Lisbon to Las Palmas to Marrakech: regional triangles, not world tours.

The visa arithmetic

Non-EU passports get 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen Area combined, which caps a European summer at three months unless you hold a nomad visa; Georgia, Albania, Turkey and the UK are the pauses that reset nothing but count for nothing. Thailand's 60-day exemption and DTV, Mexico's 180-day stamp, Colombia's 90 plus 90, Georgia's year and Malaysia's 90 days are the generous ones. The European Summer Nomad Circuit route works the Schengen count month by month.

Time zones decide the hemisphere

If your clients are in New York, the Americas are easy, Western Europe gives a long afternoon, and Asia means nights. If they are in London, the Canaries, Portugal, the Balkans, Georgia and South Africa are all workable. The builder's time-zone term counts the hours of the employer's day that fall between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. locally; the U.S. hours page ranks destinations on it.

Budget by month, not by day

A circuit is costed in rents: our mid-range one-bedroom estimates run from $350 to $450 in Siem Reap, Pai and Kathmandu, through $650 to $900 in Tbilisi, Medellín, Mexico City and Budapest, to $1,400 to $1,500 in Lisbon and Barcelona, with living costs on top. The builder sums the year and shows every assumption.

Regenerate it

Save the circuit, live it, and rebuild it next year with what you learned: the city that was too hot, the one you wanted three months in, the client whose hours changed. That is the point of the tool.
