Slow Travel vs Fast Travel

What changes when you stay a month instead of three nights: the money, the friendships, the work, the fatigue and what you actually remember.

Fast travel counts countries; slow travel counts conversations. Both are legitimate, and most long-term travellers start fast and end slow because the trip teaches them to. Here is what changes, with the numbers where we have them.

Money

Every move costs: a transport fare, a first-night premium in a new town, a lost half-day of orientation, and the restaurant you chose badly because you did not know better. Monthly rentals are 30 to 50 percent cheaper per night than nightly ones in our estimates, and cooking becomes possible. A traveller who stays a month in Chiang Mai, Oaxaca or Tbilisi spends less per day than one passing through for three nights, at a higher standard of living.

People

In three nights you meet other travellers. In three weeks you meet the people who live there: the market vendor who saves you the good mangoes, the cafe owner, the language exchange partner, the neighbour. The friendships of long-term travel are almost all made in places people stayed.

Work

Remote work and fast travel do not mix; the admin of arrival eats the working week. Slow travel is the nomad's precondition, which is why the circuit builder works in two-month blocks.

Fatigue

Travel burnout is real and predictable: it arrives around month three or four of fast movement, and it looks like indifference to things that should be astonishing. The cure is a fortnight in one place with a kitchen. Slow travellers rarely get there in the first place.

What you remember

A year of fast travel blurs into a highlight reel. A year of slow travel produces five or six places you can describe at the level of streets, prices and faces, which turns out to be what most people wanted from the trip.

When fast is right

A two-week holiday, a region you are unlikely to revisit, a transit corridor between two places you care about, or a first trip when everything is new and the appetite is enormous. The two-week Thailand route is deliberately fast; the summer nomad circuit is deliberately slow. The Route Builder's pace setting (fast, normal, slow) recosts any route at any speed.

The hybrid most people settle on

Bases of three to six weeks connected by short, fast stretches of movement: a month in Hanoi, a fast ten days down the coast, a month in Hoi An. Slow where it is rich; fast where it is a corridor.
