Planning Multi-Country Routes

How to turn a list of countries into a route that works: borders, seasons, visas, overland versus flying, and the engine behind our Route Builder.

A list of countries is not a route. A route has an order that respects geography, seasons and visa clocks, a pace that matches your budget, and transport that exists. This is how to build one, and how the Route Builder does it automatically.

Start with anchors

Two or three fixed points: a date-bound experience, a friend's wedding, a trek season, a flight already booked. Everything else flexes around them.

Order by geography, then season

Trace the anchors on a map and connect them with the shortest sensible line; backtracking is the most expensive habit in long-term travel. Then check each stop against its season on the month pages: a route that reaches Vietnam's centre in October meets the floods, one that reaches Nepal in July meets the monsoon. Shift the order or the dates until the season fit is green.

Count the visa days

Schengen's 90 in 180 is the big one; Thailand's 60, Mexico's up to 180, Colombia's 90 plus 90, Georgia's 365 and Albania's year for Americans are the generous ones; Vietnam, Australia and Tanzania need advance applications. The finder shows every rule with its source; the builder lists the countries to check for your passport.

Overland or fly

Overland under 500 km almost always: cheaper, more interesting, no airport day. Fly over 900 km or any sea. Between, it depends on the route's quality: Vietnam's trains, Mexico's executive buses, Europe's rail and the Laos-China railway make long overland legs pleasant; Bolivian buses and Central American chicken buses at night do not. The builder's transport estimate ($0.045 per km overland, $0.11 per km plus $35 by air) is a planning allowance, not a fare.

Set the pace

Four nights a stop is fast, seven is normal, twelve or more is slow. Divide the trip length by the pace to get the number of stops, and be honest about which it is. Fewer stops is nearly always the better trip.

Cost it

Per-stop costs are nights times the destination's daily estimate at your tier, plus transport between stops. The builder totals it and flags the budget gap; the route library shows the same costing for ten finished routes.

Leave slack

Ten to fifteen percent of the days unassigned. Every good route changes after the first week; the slack is where the recommendations from other travellers go.

Edit, then edit again

The builder lets you reorder stops, add and remove them and change nights; the budget and the day count recalculate. Save a version, live it for a fortnight, and rebuild it with what you learned.
