Long-Term Travel in Retirement

Retirement backpacking and slow travel on a pension: budgets by destination, healthcare and insurance after 65, the visa routes for retirees, and keeping a home base.

Retirement removes the one constraint every other traveller has: time. What it adds is a fixed income, a healthcare question that grows each year, and a set of visa routes designed specifically for people like you. This guide covers the practicalities; it is research, not financial or legal advice.

Budgets

A pension of $2,500 a month funds a comfortable life in Chiang Mai, Siem Reap, Hoi An or Kathmandu by our estimates (mid-range monthly costs around $1,600 to $1,800, comfortable $3,300 to $3,600), a mid-range life in Oaxaca, Tbilisi, Medellín or Kuala Lumpur ($2,000 to $2,400), and a careful one in Lisbon, Budapest or Las Palmas ($2,500 to $3,600 at mid-range). The money-last tool and the FIRE calculator (set your pension as income) run the figures; the geographic arbitrage guide explains the mechanism.

Healthcare after 65

The decisive factor. International insurance becomes expensive and restrictive; some home-country systems stop covering you abroad (US Medicare does not travel). The practical solutions retirees use: a residence visa in a country with good private care and local insurance (Portugal, Spain, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico), self-insuring routine care where it is cheap (a consultation is $20 to $50 in most of our Asian and Latin American cities) while insuring catastrophes, and keeping access to the home system by maintaining residence there part of the year. Choose bases with hospitals you would trust: our country pages name them.

Visa routes for retirees

Portugal's D7, Spain's non-lucrative visa, Malaysia My Second Home, Thailand's retirement (O-A, O-X) and Long-Term Resident visas, Mexico's Temporary and Permanent Resident visas, Colombia's pension visa, Indonesia's retirement KITAS, Cambodia's ER visa, South Africa's retired person visa, Georgia's year without paperwork. Income floors range from about $1,000 a month (Colombia's pension visa is tied to multiples of the minimum wage) to $4,000-plus (Mexico's consular thresholds, Portugal's lower but with other conditions). Every one is in the finder with its official source and the date we last checked; thresholds change yearly.

Pace

Slow by design: a month or a season per place, two or three places a year, long enough for a doctor, a dentist, a yoga class and a favourite restaurant. The circuit builder with the time-zone requirement off is a retirement planner in disguise.

Keeping a home base

Most retired long-term travellers keep one: for healthcare continuity, tax residence, family, and a place to recover. Renting it out for the months away funds a good part of the travel; the FIRE travel vs expat retirement guide weighs the alternatives.

Safety and scams

Older travellers are targeted for distraction thefts and fake-police scams in a few cities (Barcelona, Prague, Buenos Aires, Bangkok's gem shops); the destination pages name them. The rules are the same as for anyone: apps for taxis, bank-branch ATMs, no wallets handed to anyone in a uniform, no unsolicited help at machines.

Family and the flights home

Budget two unplanned flights a year and choose bases with direct connections: Lisbon, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Mexico City and Istanbul are hubs; Pai and Luang Prabang are not.

The destinations retirees keep choosing

Chiang Mai, Kuala Lumpur, Lisbon and Porto, the Canaries and Madeira, Oaxaca and Mexico City, Medellín, Cape Town, Budapest and, for the adventurous, Tbilisi and Tirana. Their pages explain why, and their lifestyle notes for older backpackers are frank about the downsides.
