How to Plan a Career Break

Three to twelve months away from a career you intend to return to: the conversation with your employer, the money, the structure that makes it defensible, and the re-entry.

A career break is a gap year with a return address. The planning differs from a student's gap year in three ways: the money is yours and finite, the employer relationship matters, and the story you tell afterwards has to make sense to a hiring manager. Done well it is one of the best investments a mid-career professional can make; done badly it is an expensive holiday with a gap on the CV.

The employer conversation

Three outcomes: a formal sabbatical (unpaid leave with a job to return to; increasingly common in large employers and worth asking for even where no policy exists), a resignation with a door left open, or a resignation with a clean break. Ask early, in writing, with a date range and a plan; offer to time it around the business's quiet season and to hand over properly. A sabbatical letter is also what visa officers and landlords like to see.

The money

Three pots: the trip (our destination estimates put a mid-range month at $2,000 to $2,500 in Southeast Asia, $2,800 to $3,500 in Latin America, $4,000 to $5,500 in southern Europe), the home obligations that continue (rent or mortgage, storage, insurance, subscriptions) and the landing fund (three months of living after return while you find the next role). Financial preparation for a sabbatical works the numbers; the Trip Cost Calculator prices any destination.

Give it a shape

The breaks that pay off professionally have a thread: a language learned to working level (Spanish in Antigua or Oaxaca, Portuguese in Lisbon, Japanese in Kyoto), a skill (diving instructor, yoga teacher training, a cooking course, sailing qualifications), a long physical project (a trek, a cycle route, the Camino), volunteering through a serious organisation, or a piece of work (writing, research, a side project). One thread, plus travel around it. Our career break pages list the destinations our desk rates for this.

Length

Three months is a long holiday; six months is a break; twelve is a different life. Six months is the length at which most people get both the rest and the thread, and at which employers' patience and savings both tend to hold.

Insurance, health and admin

Long-stay insurance (annual policies cap trips at 30 to 90 days), a travel-medicine appointment, bank cards and two-factor codes sorted, mail redirected, and the visa rules of each country checked in the finder. Schengen's 90-in-180 rule shapes a European break.

Family

Partners with their own careers, children's schooling (a term abroad is a real option; several of our destinations have international schools), ageing parents and the flights home they may demand. Budget two unplanned flights.

The re-entry

Start the job search two months before you return, from the road. Frame the break in one sentence (what you did, what you learned, why it makes you better at the job) and put it on the CV rather than hiding it. See coming home.
