How Much Does Long-Term Backpacking Cost?

Real daily figures by region and tier from our database, what they leave out, and how to turn a savings number into months on the road.

The honest answer is a range, and the range depends on three choices: where, how you sleep and how fast you move. This guide uses Digital Backpacker's own cost estimates (per person per day, editorial, dated October 2026) so that every number here is the same one the calculators use.

Daily cost by region, backpacker tier

RegionTypical backpacker dayExamples
Mainland Southeast Asia$25 to $32Chiang Mai $26, Hanoi $25, Luang Prabang $26, Siem Reap $27, Bangkok $32
South Asia$23Kathmandu $23 (trekking adds permits and guides)
Central America and Mexico$33 to $50Antigua $33, Oaxaca $38, Mexico City $43, Playa del Carmen $50
South America$38 to $45Medellín $38, Lima $38, Cusco $38, Buenos Aires $40, Rio $45
Caucasus and Balkans$38 to $41Tbilisi $38, Tirana $41
Central Europe$54 to $57Budapest $54, Prague $57
Southern and Western Europe$62 to $76Porto $62, Athens $64, Lisbon $69, Split $70, Barcelona $76
Japan and Korea$52 to $70Seoul $52, Kyoto $67, Tokyo $70

Mid-range roughly doubles or triples those figures (private rooms, restaurants, taxis); comfortable triples again. The full breakdown by category sits on each destination page with its provenance line.

What the daily figure leaves out

Flights to and from the region, flights within it, insurance (roughly $40 to $120 a month depending on age, cover and country), visas, gear, vaccinations, and the big-ticket experiences: a dive course ($300 to $450), a multi-day trek, a Galápagos or safari detour. Add them as line items in the Trip Cost Calculator. Also leave out nothing at home: subscriptions, storage, loan payments and phone plans keep running.

Turning savings into months

Savings ÷ (daily cost + home costs ÷ 30) = days. The money-last tool runs this across every destination at once: $10,000 is about a year in Kathmandu or Chiang Mai at the backpacker tier, around seven months in Mexico City, four to five in Lisbon or Budapest at mid-range, and under three in Tokyo. Those are planning figures, not promises; prices move and so do you.

Where the money actually goes

Accommodation is the largest line at every tier (30 to 45 percent), food second, and the sum of transport, activities and sundries smaller than most people fear. The cheapest lever is pace: every move costs a transport fare, a lost half-day and the premium of a first night in a new town. Staying a week where you planned three nights saves money and improves the trip.

Reserve and emergency fund

Hold 10 to 15 percent of the trip budget as a reserve inside the plan, and an emergency fund outside it equal to a flight home plus a month's living. That second fund is what makes a long trip survivable when a laptop dies or a parent falls ill.
