Ethical Volunteering Abroad

How to tell a placement that helps from one that harms: the questions to ask, the red flags, the categories that work, and why orphanage tourism is off the list.

Volunteering abroad can be the best month of a gap year or career break and it can do real damage: to children who form attachments to a rotating cast of strangers, to local workers displaced by unpaid foreigners, to communities turned into backdrops. The difference is the organisation and the role, and both are checkable in an afternoon.

The categories that generally work

  • Conversation practice and skills sharing with adults (Luang Prabang's Big Brother Mouse drop-in sessions are a model) rather than classroom teaching without training.
  • Conservation and environmental work with established NGOs: reef and turtle monitoring, reforestation, trail maintenance, animal sanctuaries that do not breed, handle or ride.
  • Skilled roles where you bring a profession: medical, engineering, IT, accounting, trades, with proper supervision and local counterparts.
  • Community-run projects that set their own priorities and employ local staff, where volunteers fill a defined gap and pay their own way.

Off the list

Orphanage visits and placements (most children in them have living parents; the demand for volunteers sustains the institutions; every major child-protection body advises against it), anything involving unsupervised contact with children, construction projects that displace local labour, and wildlife attractions that let you touch, ride or pose with animals.

Questions to ask the organisation

Do you have a published child-protection and safeguarding policy, and do you check volunteers' backgrounds? Who decides the project's priorities? How many local staff do you employ and what do volunteers do that they cannot? Where does the fee go (ask for a breakdown)? How long have you worked in this community and what has changed? Can I talk to a former volunteer and a local partner? An organisation that cannot answer these clearly is the answer.

Red flags

Placements of a week or less with children; "no experience needed" for teaching or medical roles; fees with no breakdown; photographs of volunteers holding children in the marketing; promises of a transformative experience for you rather than outcomes for them.

Length and money

Four weeks is the minimum at which most roles are useful; three months is where volunteers start to matter. Expect to pay for accommodation and food and sometimes a programme fee; the fee is not itself a red flag, the absence of a breakdown is. Compare the fee with the cost of living on the destination page.

Visas

Volunteering often needs its own visa category even where tourist entry is visa-free; the finder flags this under the volunteering purpose.

Where to look

Established umbrella directories that vet projects, universities' and professional bodies' partner programmes, conservation organisations with scientific oversight, and the long-stay communities on the ground (Chiang Mai, Siem Reap, Antigua, Kathmandu, Cape Town all have decades-old volunteer ecosystems, the good and the bad side by side).
