Digital Nomad Packing Essentials

The remote-work kit that fits in a carry-on: what makes video calls work in a guesthouse, what to leave at home, and the backups that save your income.

A nomad's bag has one extra job: it has to produce income from a table in a city you arrived in yesterday. The kit that does that reliably is smaller than most people pack and more deliberate.

The non-negotiables

  • A laptop you can replace in a day. Keep a cloud backup current and know the nearest Apple or PC repair city on your route (Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City, Lisbon, Medellín all have same-day repair).
  • Noise-cancelling headphones with a decent microphone: the single biggest upgrade to call quality in a noisy cafe or a guesthouse with a rooster.
  • A phone with eSIM and a hotspot plan as the backup internet. Guesthouse Wi-Fi fails; 4G rarely does in the cities on this site.
  • A universal adapter with USB-C power delivery and one cable that charges everything.
  • A 20,000 mAh power bank for power cuts and long bus days.

The ergonomics question

Six months hunched over a laptop at a cafe table does damage. A folding laptop stand (200 g), a compact keyboard and a mouse turn any table into a desk at eye height. A portable second screen is a luxury that heavy spreadsheet users swear by and everyone else abandons; coworking spaces supply monitors in most of our cities.

Internet, tested

Run a speed test in the apartment at 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. before paying a month's rent; our destination pages give typical fibre figures (editorial) and the realistic range in guesthouses. Carry a travel router if you rely on devices that hate captive portals, and a VPN subscription for banking and for countries that block services.

Calls that look professional

A small clip-on light makes a dim room usable; a neutral wall or a blurred background hides the hostel. Headphones with a boom or a good inline mic matter more than the camera. Schedule calls for the coworking space when the stakes are high.

Security

A password manager, two-factor codes in an authenticator app (not SMS to a home number), full-disk encryption, and a laptop lock cable for the cafe bathroom trip. Insurance that covers electronics outside the home at their replacement value; most standard travel policies cap a laptop at a fraction of its price.

Leave at home

The second laptop, the desktop microphone, the full-size keyboard, the printer, the ring light, and the belief that you will work on the beach. Sand and glare win.
